Freight tram #7039

27 march 2011 - Budapest (HU) – depot/zajezdnia Zuglo. A chance meeting outside Zuglo depot – two Mukis are ‘topping and tailing’ two UV motor cars which are being moved to the depot. After the two UV trams were safely stored away, we were offered a very nice ride back to the central workshops in one of the Mukis – no seats, so just like strap-hanging on the London Underground.

Freight tram #7061

27 september 2009 - Budapest (HU) - Kamaraerdei ut. The little display at the Line 41 terminus last weekend included one of the celebrated BKV ‘Muki’ goods locomotives, still quite a familiar sight on the city’s tramways for transporting equipment and materials and shunting duties.

27 march 2011 - Budapest (HU) – depot/zajezdnia Ferencvaros. Deep in the sheds of this old depot are a number of treasures – several ‘Muki’ works cars and lots of withdrawn UV Type trams, most of which will never run again. This is also the operating base for some of the BKZ museum trams.

28 march 2011 - Budapest (HU) – Orz Vezer Tere. BKV Budapest operates a number of these distinctive 4-wheeled tram locomotives from 1926-7, known as ‘Mukis’, used for a variety of works purposes including towing broken-down trams. Some are specially equipped for snow clearing. Most of their activities seem to be at night and they are therefore tucked away in depots during daylight hours. On 28 March, two Mukis suddenly appeared at Zuglo depot ‘topping and tailing’ two old UV trams being brought there for storage. An unusual Muki ride was soon arranged! Off we rode to the main tramway workshops at Orz Vezer Tere, where to our amazement two more Mukis were standing. All four Mukis were coupled together, and off they all went, probably to Ferencvaros depot – a FOUR CAR Muki train!

Freight tram #7064

27 march 2011 - Budapest (HU) - Jaszberenyi utca. On a disused industrial track near the old Dreher brewery stands this withdrawn Muki, along with another old Budapest tram that I couldn’t identify.

Freight tram #7074

27 september 2009 - Budapest (HU) – Szentendre. BKV snowbrooms are very similar to the Muki goods trams and were built by the same makers. This one was transferred in 1957 from the city tramways to work on the HEV suburban railways as their #2014 and is now at Szentendre.

Freight tram #7077

27 september 2009 - Budapest (HU) – Szentendre. This was once a wooden-bodied ‘Muki’ goods tram of the Budapest city tramways. In 1958 it was given a smart new look with a steel body and converted to a ‘Sincsiszolo’ car (which I think is a track grinder or scrubber car). It now lives in the Szentendre museum with other BKV and HEV equipment.

Freight tram #7130

28 april 2004 - Budapest (HU) – depot/zajezdnia Budafok. A ‘Muki’ adapted for use as a snow clearing tram. These goods motors were a Hungarian speciality, but can be found also on lines in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Budapest once had 40 of these, but there are now only a few left.
