Carris (Maley & Taunton) #735

20 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) - Calcada de Santo Andre. Chaos in the Alfama (2). Suddenly, a man appears from nowhere holding one of the little red/green signalling bats once used to control the two-way tram traffic along these very narrow streets – I have no idea who he is, or where he obtained the bat. I don’t think he works for Carris! For some years now, traffic signals have replaced the men who once stood on duty here.

20 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) – Calcada de Santo Andre. One of the very narrow streets which form the famous Graca circle. This tram is not a ‘remodolado’, but is largely in original condition. It runs on a British Maley and Taunton truck and has Metrovick motors, although the body was built locally in the Carris workshops. It has only a trolley pole.

20 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) – Calcada de Santo Andre. Chaos in the Alfama (1). Line 12 used to run in both directions here – just look at the problems facing trams climbing this very steep and narrow street. This is a 700 Class tram – not a Class 500 ‘Remodolado’ – so is double-ended and has only a trolley pole. The 500 series cars have been heavily rebuilt as single-enders, of course, from this original 700 type.

Carris / Maley & Tauton #802

19 july 2010 - Lisbon, Carris Museum. This cigar-looking wagon is a design revolution of the 1930s; the Lisbonners called these trams 'Boi', that means 'Oxes' - number of the first new wagon was #801, and figure '8' looked almost like a letter 'B' (and figure "1" like letter "I"). These trams were built in Santo Amaro shop complex.

Carris / Maley & Tauton #904

19 july 2010 - Lisbon, Carris Museum. One of 10 4-axled "Saopboxes" trams built by C.C.F.L. Santo Amaro shops in the end of 1940s. It seems that it's still in occasional operation. It's bogies have a very interesting construction, very rare in this type of rail vehicles. This tram was withdrawned from service in the end of 1980s / in the beginning of 1990s.

19 july 2010 - Lisbon, Carris Museum. A part of tram exposition, seen from a distance. Near the 4-axled "Soapbox" tram #904 stands a pre-war, also 4-axled wagon #348 (probably St. Louis, and probably also still in occasional service). In the background tram powerhouse's old AEG generator can be seen.
