СП "Градски пътнически транспорт" (1959-1992)/

София 70 #765

1982 - Sofia, Lenin Sqr. (today Sv. Nedelya). “Sofia 70” – a legendary three-section Bulgarian tram on one of Sofia central squares. Building of this tram model (181 units) began in 1970 and continued till the late 70s. Its design, most probably inspired by Tatra T3/T4, was firstly introduced in 1965, when the two-section tram “Sofia” (or “Sofia 65”) came out the tram factory named also “Sofia”. In fact “Sofia 65” was inherited by “Sofia 100”, and “Sofia 70” by “Bulgaria 1300” – the main difference between the two generations was the design. The last “Sofia 70s” were scrapped in 2003. Only one (#174) was preserved as a historical tram, but no care for its conservation was taken, and now it is in a very bad condition. These trams were real symbols of our capital for decades. The tram track on the photo doesn’t exist any more too. Until the mid 80s it surrounded the eastern side of the church Sv. Nedelya, but then they moved it by the western one, as they made a pedestrian zone on the old place. The operator is not SKGT, but its predecessor – Stopanska direkcia “Gradski transport” :) The photo is from an old issue of the women magazine “Zhenata dnes”. PS it would be great if somebody add these tram types in the main menu (София and София 70).
