Milnes Sunshade #32

22 september 1987 - Douglas, Isle of Man - Derby Castle. Horse tram #32 at the depot and northern terminus, with similar car #34 peeping out of the shed. This is also the terminus of the Manx Electric Railway. If you look closely, you will see an engine change has taken place since the previous photo! You can also see the conductor collecting fares and issuing tickets, which he does whilst the tram is moving along the street. Trams are shunted here by hand – try doing that with a Konstal or Tatra…….

22 september 1987 - Douglas, Isle of Man – Loch Promenade. Several ‘firsts’ for TWB? The Douglas Horse Tramway has run continually since 1876 along its 2 km route along the sea shore, although it now operates only from April to September. Although historic, it isn’t a museum, but a real transport system - around 40 trams are available for service, but many are not used regularly as they are old and fragile. Most are ‘toastrack’ style, like #32 of 1896 (one of their newer trams) shown here. The engine size is 1 horsepower :-)

12 september 1994 - Douglas, Isle of Man – Strathallan Crescent. The 3 ft gauge Douglas Corporation horse tramway continues (just about) to run every summer, but only with an infrequent service. This is the last original horse tramway still operating in the world. This 1990s view shows cars that are today stored out of use, including ‘turtle-back’ roof saloon car 27 of 1892. The Summerland entertainment complex behind the trams was opened in 1971 but destroyed by fire two years later, killing over 50 people. A portion was later rebuilt, but is now demolished.
