27 march 2012 - Charleroi (BE) – Piges. I started a big argument the other day about the Trenscianske Teplice line in Slovakia –a tramway or a railway? Many of you couldn’t agree. Well, if that is a railway, how do you describe the Charleroi Light Metro? Heavy rails, long tunnels, very elaborate stations built either underground or in the air, ‘next train’ indicators and full signalling (Trenscianske has none of these) – but I think all agree that Charleroi belongs in the non-rail part of TWB. However, all it lacks is passengers – the system was built with much Government money in the 1980s, but some parts were left unfinished when the money ran out and are only now, over thirty years later, being brought into service. Piges is just one of the huge, deserted stations which doesn’t really serve any place where people actually live.
