13 may 2013 - Portland, Broadway Bridge. It is the longest rail bascule bridge in the world. Streetcars used it between 1913 and 1940 and trolleybuses between 1937 and 1958. This bridge was designed by Rudolph Modrzejewski, or Modjeski as he was known in the US, a Polish civil engineer. He was born in Bochnia (Upper Siliesia) to Gustav and Helen (famous actress) Modrzejewski, earned his degree in Paris, and became a world renowned enginner in the US. He designed many bridges, among them the San Francisco Bay Bridge, opened in 1913 and closed in 1989 after its top level collapsed due to the Loma Prieta Earthquake. It finally reopened on September 2, 2013.
