What was the first popular private car? Austin Mini? By the way, we imported some Bedford OB buses to Poland short after WWII.
The most popular British cars of the 1950s were probably Ford Anglia and Morris Minor. You are right, JP - Bedford OB coaches were exported all over the World.
These cars look very small. Were privat cars popular only from 1960s?
Few people had enough money to buy a car until the middle of 1950s - the British economy was still recovering from the 1939-45 War. A chance for a little enjoyment was offered by a coach trip, maybe to the seaside or some other nice place, so these were really popular. This was the busy time for operators, who often had only enough money to buy a small vehicle. Lines of coaches would be found at places such as Brighton sea front, offering half-day trips to holidaymakers (who often used the same coaches to get to their destination, anyway). You walked along the line, read the advertising boards that operators placed outside the door of each coach, chose a destination and off you went, paying in cash to the driver. One popular destination was always the `mystery tour` - did they blindfold the driver?
Interesting story. In Poland you could most often have a trip by bus because of small number of passenger cars probably until 1989
