29 september 2008 - Sibiu, Romania. The delightful Sibiu tramway has only featured here once before. This line is all that remains of a small metre-gauge network and runs from the edge of the city to the village of Rasinari. Only a few journeys operate, in the early morning and early evening. Three trams and two trailers remain available for service – these came from Geneva (Geneve/Genf) and were the first second-hand trams to be imported into Romania. Swiss Standard tram 724 nears Rasinari on an evening trip in a typical rural landscape.

29 september 2008 - Sibiu, Romania – Rasinari. Tram 724 stands at Rasinari village terminus at the end of its journey. As the tram is single-ended, it must now turn on a triangle in the street.

29 september 2008 - Sibiu, Romania – Rasinari. Tram 724 waits in the turning triangle before setting off back to Sibiu. The unmade street and horse transport are typical of this area.

29 september 2008 - Sibiu, Romania. A typical view along the Sibiu-Rasinari village interurban. The tram is ex-Geneve 724 - I’m sorry, but I don’t know the name of the cow.

29 september 2008 - Sibiu, Romania – Rasinari. At the very end of the rails in Rasinari village, the interurban tram prepares to reverse into the turning triangle. Horse transport for agriculture is very common in this rural area.

29 september 2008 - Sibiu, Romania. The white ex-Geneve car at a passing loop with an evening Rasinari trip. As the line normally operates on the ‘one engine in steam’ principle, these loops are not often needed. The cart operates in the same way - one engine in steam :-)

29 september 2008 - Sibiu, Romania - Dumbrava. Leaving the Sibiu city limits – soon they will need a much bigger sign, if any more cities join this club………they're friends with everyone.

29 september 2008 - Sibiu (RO) – Rasinari. Some pictures today of the wonderful Sibiu to Rasinari tram, which I don’t think will last much longer, as it must lose money and a modern, low-floor bus travels the same route every hour (and goes much further into Sibiu city) - the tram only runs a few times a day. In Rasinari, the line just ends here at a reversing triangle in the centre of the village (it never went any further).

29 september 2008 - Sibiu (RO) – Rasinari. The ex-Geneve tram swings back into the reversing siding, ready for the return to Sibiu. There won’t be any passengers……..

29 september 2008 - Sibiu (RO) – Muzeul Traditionale. A short way along the tram line from Sibiu is this popular ‘skansen’ or folk museum, which receives many visitors. They all seem to travel by bus, though, as the trolleybus wires stop short of here and the tram line doesn’t go into the centre of the city – a real wasted opportunity.

29 september 2008 - Sibiu (RO) – Rasinari. Approaching Rasinari on an early evening trip, tram #724 passes a horse cart complete with a buffet car, so the farmers can get a drink if they get thirsty on the way home.

29 september 2008 - Sibiu (RO) – Rasinari. The tram suddenly appears from the apple orchards to surprise a couple of car drivers. After crossing to the left side, it will run alongside the road into Rasinari village.

29 september 2008 - Sibiu (RO) – Rasinari. An evening scene in Rasinari village. I wonder how long this amazing line will last, now the trolleybuses are gone?

29 september 2008 - Sibiu, Romania - Calea Dumbravii: The tramway from Sibiu to Rasinari runs for the most part alongside the roadside - it once went a little further but has now been cut back to a zoo and folk museum at the city limits. Ex-Geneve tram 724 is shown en route to Rasinari, passing one of the local residents. Even when the tramway was in public service, there were so few journeys that most travellers had changed to the bus, which ran frequently along exactly the same route but had the added benefit of going right into Sibiu city centre.

29 september 2008 - Sibiu, Romania - Cimitirul: At the former terminus of the Rasinari line, all three operational trams are seen together. Car 724 has just come from Rasinari with a public journey and the other two trams are waiting to begin a private charter trip along the line (which only cost a few Euros for a whole morning, when the service tram did not run). It was very unusual to see all three trams working together like this.

29 september 2008 - Rasinari, Romania: At the end of the line in Rasinari village, tram 724, which came to Sibiu from Geneve in Switzerland, waits in the reversing wye to begin a trip back to Sibiu. The unmade street is typical. I believe that this section of track has now been cut back to the edge of the village.
