29 may 2006 - Liepaja, Latvia – Rigas Iela. Car 233 (not 1018!) has just passed the very fine old railway station. This building still functions, but mainly as a bus terminal – there is (or was, at the time of my visit) just one passenger train a day.

29 may 2006 - Liepaja (LV) – Rigas iela. KT4-D #233 (not 1018!) passes the depot along the old main road towards Riga, closely followed by #235. Only seven trams are needed to run the service on this one-route, 13km long system, so over half of their 20-odd ex-DDR trams are spare.

29 may 2006 - Liepaja (LT) – Liela iela. Today, we visit the small, single-route tramway in Liepaja. This system dates from 1899 and was the very first tramway in the Baltic States. Originally, several short lines covered the city, but for many years there has been just one, a 13km long line which requires just seven trams to run the service. This is car #233 and not #1018 (which is the frequency of the local radio station).

29 may 2006 - Liepaja (LT) – Rigas iela. Here is #233 again, just outside the depot – the connecting tracks can be seen in the foreground. There is no direct connection between the depot and the main line, so trams have to go into a side street opposite, then reverse across the road to gain access.
