11 may 2007 - Linz, AT - Postlingberg: I visited the unique Postlingbergbahn just before it was `modernised` in 2008-9. This is one of the steepest tram lines in the world, reaching a gradient 11.6% or 1:9 without rack, cable or any other assistance. It was separate from the Linz city tramways because their track is an unusual 900mm wide and the Postlingbergbahn was a metre gauge line. There is the top station showing two of the 1958-built trams - note their Roman numbering system and the continued use of trolley poles. Linz city completely re-gauged the line to 900mm and swept away nearly all these old trams. They put in a connection to their other lines, plus three new low-floor Bombardier Flexity trams specially modified for the steep gradient, so services can now run right through from here to Linz Hauptbahnhof.
