WStB L1 #2597

22 march 2011 - Wien, AT - Hietzing Kennedybrucke: Another nice tram out to play from the Vienna Tramway Museum is this Graz Type L1 of 1921. The Museum is an essential visit for any tramway enthusiast - it holds a bewildering collection of trams and buses from all stages of development of the vast Vienna tramway system. It seems that Weiner Linien and their predecessors have never thrown anything away.

23 march 2011 - Wien (AT) – Reichsratsstrasse. This track just behind the Parliament building is surprisingly quiet, as the very busy Ringstrasse is only a few yards away.

23 march 2011 - Wien (AT) - Wahringer Gurtel. One of the trams from the Weiner Tramwaymuseum stands just a short way from one of the many Wien tram depots, which can just be seen in the background. This Type L1 car dates from 1921 and was built by Graz – a typical Vienna tram of the 1920s.

23 march 2011 - Wien (AT) – Siebertgasse. .... .. and this is how we reached the WLB station at Wolfganggasse, along this connecting street, normally used only by Wien-Baden interurbans.

23 march 2011 - Wien (AT) – Wolfganggasse. Here we are at the WLB station with a city tram! As I said, these don’t normally come here, so we thought we would make a point. The local passengers waiting on the platform really didn’t know what to make of this.........

Simmering G4

15 august 2010 - Warszawa, Interflugowo.

7 july 2006 - Timisoara - RATT Museum.

Graz G #5080

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Strada Gageni. Another identical GP car – this one was WSB #6416 and has a similar history to 5081, pictured earlier. Why these two trams finished up in Ploiesti, I have no idea! They both look derelict now and are unlikely to run again. Several of these double-ended trams have ended up in Romania from Wiener Linien, who had a massive clear-out when they built a fleet of new works cars a few years ago. Another three-axle conversion.

Graz G1 #5081

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Strada Gageni. The unmistakable outline of a Wien works car. This one has an interesting history – it was built by Graz in 1901 as a passenger car and converted by Graf und Stift in 1958, becoming WSB Wien #6413. After a spell at the Mariazell museum in Austria, it came here in 1998. In recent years it has been fitted with a PCC bogie at one end, making it into a three axle car.

Graz G1 #6412

6 may 2007 - Wien (AT) – tramway museum, Erdberg. Wien has so many work trams that they are divided into Types – this snowplough was a Type G machine. It began life in 1901 as a passenger tram built by Grazer Waggonfabrik and was rebuilt in 1958 by Graf und Stift into the form shown here.

8 may 2007 - Wien/Vienna (AT). This one crept up when I wasn’t looking, so not a good photo. I have no idea where it was going, or why. I don’t even know where I was, either! Love the colour…..

Tramway works car #6417

29 september 2008 - Bucuresti, Romania – URAC. A further selection from the fascinating RATB central workshops. This tram will obviously never run again, but is an interesting survivor that has (so far) escaped the cutting torch. I know nothing about its history. Double cab works cars like this are still quite common in some Eastern European countries, but this appears to be the only one left in Bucuresti.

Graz G1 #6411

4 october 2008 - Timisoara, Romania – museum depot Take Ionescu. An open lorry works car from Wien, retained by the Timisoara museum group for potential preservation. An older version from Graz is shown just behind – this one has a crane mounted on it. Wien had a large number of these useful little works cars at one time.

Simmering G4 #345

6 may 2007 - Type G4 of 1903 by Grazer Waggonfabrik rebuilt 1948 by Waggonfabrik Simmering. Wien/Vienna – Erdberg tramway museum. The wonderful Wien tramway museum is one of the finest in the world (if not THE finest?). The city has kept a great many old vehicles and, as well as opening their buildings to the public, operates trams regularly throughout the year. Their collection is over 100 vehicles, all kept under cover in an old tram depot. Every tram fan should try to go there! This picture shows just a small part of one depot building.
