Ameryka też ma swój Wuppertal ;-) Uruchomiona w 1982 r. linia o długości 0,5 km łączy śródmiejskie nabrzeże z Wyspą Błotną (w rzeczywistości półwyspem), na której zlokalizowane są rózne atrakcje dla gawiedzi. Dwa wyprodukowane w Szwajcarii wagony kursują wahadłowo co kilka minut, po równoległych torach. System działa tylko w okresie kwiecień - październik.

9 august 2011 - Bombay, Bandra bus depot. To cope with the wild crowds using the local trains in Bombay every day (you can see how wild some of them are HERE) a system of overbridges was built above the local streets, one leading alongside the Bandra bus depot. The picture shows one of the newest additions to the BEST bus fleet - a CNG-powered bus with an electronic display rather than a film. In the background you can see a typical Indian slum.

9 august 2011 - Bombay, Wellington Chowk. A traditional Bombay bus next to a traditional Bombay taxi, a licence version of the Fiat 1100 from 1951. It may be difficult to believe, but India has adopted their own emissions standards, based on European norms. This bus from Colaba depot is proud to inform that it conforms to the Bharat II standard (same as Euro II). It is running on circular route 111, which takes train passengers from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus around the city centre.

9 august 2011 - Bombay, Madame Cama Road. And this is what the newest generation of double-deckers in Bombay looks like. DDs (British-made) were introduced in 1937. The one in the picture is around 10-12 years old - I remember the batch of full-length cab ones was more-or-less new 10 years ago. Each BEST bus has two destination blinds - one at the front in Marathi, one on the side in English. It\''s the same with depot signs and fleet numbers (English at the back). This is why BEST buses were my favourite tool to learn to read and write Hindi (same script). The DD buses are accessed via the rear like old-fashioned front-engined buses in the UK. Passengers are served by two conductors - one on the lower and one on the upper deck - they usually walk around the deck and hit the handrails with their ticket clippers to alert the passengers. Of course each bus is fitted with a conductor\''s rope - pulled once to signal a stop and two to allow the driver to leave. Over the last 10 years the number of DD buses has dropped, but there is stil a few dozen of them in Colaba, Backbay, Worli, and Kurla depots. The picture shows bus 4027 from Backbay depot on route 138 running between said depot and the magnificent Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station or - as we called it - the Station Formerly Known as VT (Victoria Terminus).

9 august 2011 - Bombay, Marine Drive. The bus public transport in Bombay is similar in many aspects to that of London, and not just because of the colour of the vehicles. There is a huge number of bus lines, the daily vehicle requirement is slightly larger than London\''s, and the buses come in a number of sizes - from a minibus (like this one) to double-deckers of around 11 metres in length. Both cities also hate bendies as much - Bombay experimented with them around 2000 in the suburbs but quickly gave up. The photo shows a gas-powered minibus from Backbay depot running on route 9 Limited in the very centre of the city.

9 august 2011 - Krishna Chandra Road, Bandra, Mumbai. Time for some more of India. This is a typical BEST bus. BEST (Brinahmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport) is a city-owned monopolist responsible for electricity and buses. This structure is - of course - anachronistic. BEST was initially a tram company, which sold surplus electricity to private users. In time they built the city electricity grid and ditched the trams (in 1964), briefly experimenting with trolleybuses. This is what I actually went to India for - the ten year anniversary of my graduation from this good institution. It was a great experience to go back to the place I spent two of the best years of my life. At the end we were treated to a ride on the bus of the same company that has been ferrying us down to Pune for shopping every Saturday for over a decade. 1 august 2011 - Calcutta, B.B.D. Bag. I found something else from Cal after all. A really worn out bus made by Ashok Leyland runs through one of the main squares of the city, towards the Rabindra Setu bridge. Just behind it is a low-floor Volvo B9 (sadly something obstructed the shot as it came past me), made in India, and bought by the state transport company of West Bengal. To the left we see a Hindustan Ambassador, which is basically a licensed Oxford Minor, made in India non-stop since the 40s. A country of contrasts indeed...

23 february 2011 - Damaszek, ul. Mahmouda Khali. Zagadka Scanii w Syrii powoli zaczyna się wyjaśniać. Scania dostarczała do Iranu podwozia autobusowe, które na miejscu były karosowane przez miejscowego producenta. Z uwagi na niewielką liczbę źródeł dot. okresu przed rewolucją i bezpośrednio po niej, nie ustaliłem jeszcze nazwy tego producenta, być może jest to Iran Khoto, które obecnie wytwarza na licencji (?) autobusy miejskie i międzymiastowe poprzedniej generacji Scanii.

Ci kłamią jak najęci (zwykle: "nie ma autobusu/dolmusza do X, są tylko taksówki"), a w najlepszym razie pobierają prowizję od sprzedawcy biletów na autobus, do którego nas dowiozą.
