Snowbroom

29 may 2006 - Liepaja (LT) – depot/zajezdnia Rigas iela. Another view of the venerable snowbroom. The body must have been built locally by a garden shed maker and has no right angles at all!

Snowbroom

29 may 2006 - Liepaja (LT) _ depot/zajezdnia Rigas iela. One of the oldest working trams in Europe. This snowbroom dates from the opening of the Liepaja system in 1899 and is believed to come from the Herbrand factory in Germany (who supplied the original Liepaja passenger cars). This old machine is still used in winter and, as you can see, had recently received a new brush when we visited.

Snowbroom

16 october 2010 - Liepāja. Tramvaju depo. Vecākais tramvajs Baltijā, 1950-ajos pārbūvēts par sniegatīri. Būvēts 19. gs. beigās, iespējams, uz Herbrand bāzes.

Snowbroom

29 may 2006 - Liepaja (LV) – depot/zajezdnia. A close-up picture of the left-hand controller – made by ACEC Charleroi, so probably came to Liepaja as part of a passenger tram a very long time ago. The Liepaja tramway dates from 1899 (the first tramway in the Baltic states) and perhaps was built by a Belgian company – I don’t know. Belgian companies built electric tramways all over the world in the early 1900s.

Snowbroom

29 may 2006 - Liepaja (LV) – depot/zajezdnia. Inside the old snowbroom. There are TWO controllers, one to operate the brushes and the other to move the tram – I don’t know which is which, though.

Snowbroom

29 may 2006 - Liepaja (LV) – depot/zajezdnia. The extremely old Liepaja snowbroom, of uncertain origin but believed to be based on an 1899 tram. There are no 90% angles anywhere on the body!

Snowbroom

29 june 2006 - Liepaja, Latvia/Latvija – Depot, Rigas Iela. A remarkable survivor and one of the oldest working, non-preserved trams in Europe. This snowbroom is reputed to be converted from an 1899 Herbrand (Koln) passenger car supplied to Liepaja when the tramway was first opened. The bodywork (if you can call it that) was built locally – probably by a maker of garden sheds :-)
