9 august 2011 - Crich, UK - National Tramway Museum: No visit to the museum would be complete without a ride on the 1898 Milnes `toastrack` tram ex-Blackpool and Fleetwood interurban tramway. Operating at Blackpool for forty years, it was stored after the open `boat` trams arrived and eventually came to Crich in 1964, since when it has been everyone`s favourite tram.

9 august 2011 - Crich, UK - National Tramway Museum: Just about the newest tram in the collection is #602, built as a prototype in 1953. It was intended as the first tram of a GBP2M fleet to go underground in Leeds city centre, where traffic congestion was becoming a problem. The tram had several advanced features, including the VAMBAC control system (a bit like a PCC) but the Leeds management stopped the project and #602 was confined to a short shuttle service in the city centre, never showing its full potential. At Crich, it is regarded as an `ugly duckling` - a huge debate has raged abount restoration but nothing has happened, because the mechanics are very complex and there are no spare parts.

9 august 2011 - Crich, UK - National Tramway Museum: Continuing my theme of the more modern trams in the UK national collection, here is #1297, a Glasgow car built in 1927. Advanced for its time, it was constructed in Glasgow City Transport`s own workshops and ran there until the system closed in 1962, the last big city tramway in Britain to do so.

9 august 2011 - Crich, UK - National Tramway Museum: Resting between tours of duty in one of the NTM depot sheds, #331 of London`s Metropolitan Electric Tramways is an interesting vehicle. Built in 1930 by the Union Construction Company, it was a prototype for a class of tram known as the `Feltham`, which embodied many advances in passenger comfort and operating convenience. The MET company became part of London Transport, and by 1937 the tram was sold as non-standard to Sunderland Corporation, where it operated successfully until the 1950s. Restored to run at the Gateshead Garden Festival of 1990, it was then brought to Crich and has been a regular performer ever since.

9 august 2011 - Crich,UK - National Tramway Museum: Seen beneath the Bowes Lyon bridge which is a feature of the Crich museum is this tram from the Johannesburg Municipal Tramways of South Africa, a large system with British origins. Built by the UECC company of Preston, Lancashire, it would have been shipped in `kit form` and assembled on arrival in South Africa. It ran there until 1959 and was later brought back to England as an example of a tram built in the UK but exported - one of many.

9 august 2011 - Crich, UK - National Tramway Museum: Car #7 of the Chesterfield Corporation Tramways was fully restored in 1997, but was built way back in 1904. The style is typical of many trams supplied to smaller town tramways around the turn of the 19th/20th century and this particular example was chosen for rebuilding because Chesterfield was the nearest tramway system to Crich. Withdrawn when the system closed down in 1927, the tram was turned into a holiday cottage and survived until 1973, when the remains were brought to Crich for storage and eventual restoration.

9 august 2011 - Crich, UK - National Tramway Museum: An exhibition hall at Crich houses several displays about tramways and some vehicles that can`t be included in the operating fleet. Here is #1147 of the Den Haag (Netherlands) tramway, built in 1958 by the La Brugeoise factory in Belgium and a true PCC car (if you don`t know what a PCC tram is, please contact me and I will try to explain!). This tram can`t be operated at Crich because it is single-ended, but the running track here isn`t. It is, however, an example of a very important step in the history of world tramways.

9 august 2011 - Crich, UK - National Tramway Museum: A peek inside some of the depots at Crich Tramway Village (the new name for this museum) where nearly 80 trams of various shapes and sizes are preserved, some in operational condition. In this view are several of the working fleet - prominent is #22 from Glasgow in Scotland, one of the largest tramway systems in the UK and one of the last surviving `traditional` or first generation networks.

9 august 2011 - Crich, UK - National Tramway Museum: Almost all the historic trams in the collection at Crich can only carry people who are able to climb up narrow, steep steps - they certainly can`t carry wheelchairs or other mobility aids, so for many years less able visitors couldn`t take a tram ride, which was one of the main reasons for coming here. So the NTM obtained this 1969 RAW tram from the Berlin system, which has been cleverly converted to include a wheelchair lift, providing easy access for disabled visitors. The tram runs a coulpe of times on most days and is available if required at other times.
AEC Regent Tower Wagon #CWJ 410
26 august 1997 - A vehicle that has eluded TWB until now is this ex-Sheffield Corporation AEC Regent of 1937 which was converted into a tower wagon at some point in the 1950s or 1960s. Conversion of old buses to various types of service vehicle was frequently undertaken by bus and tram operators - this one was a highbridge bus with Weymann body until converted. Now it performs useful duties maintaining the overhead wires at the National Tramway Museum in Derbyshire.

2011 - Crich, Derbyshire (GB) – National Tramway Museum. The ex-Berlin ‘Reko’ tram which has been converted to an Access Tram, complete with a wheelchair lift, for disabled visitors to the museum. On most operating days it is available for use as required. The livery has recently been changed from red and white to a more authentic, all-white colour scheme. Plans to convert a former East German Tatra tram for similar duties have now been abandoned. A very happy New Year to all TWB users everywhere........

29 september 2011 - Crich, Derbyshire (GB) – National Tramway Museum. You might ask why a South African tram is in the British national collection? In fact, this vehicle was built at Preston, Lancashire in 1906 for export and ran in Johannesburg until the tramway system there closed in 1960. Although it appears similar to contemporary British trams, it has larger opening windows (for the African climate) and bilingual notices in English and Afrikaans. It came to Crich in 1964, so was one of the first electric trams to operate at the museum. The Crich pub, like all other buildings in the museum street, was brought here from elsewhere and rebuilt – it serves good beer!

29 september 2011 - Crich, Derbyshire (GB) – National Tramway Museum. A 1904 double deck tram originally operated in the town of Chesterfield, quite close to Crich. Originally open top, it later gained a top cover and open balconies, as seen here. The Chesterfield system closed down in 1927 and the tramcar body became a holiday home, eventually coming to the museum where it was stored for several years. In 1997, after a restoration costing nearly £250,000, it returned to service at the museum and is now a regular performer, being representative of the classic British, four wheeled tram of the early 1900s.

The top decks of Glasgow trams were painted different colours to show which route they operated – this was a ‘white’ car. Many people in those days couldn’t read the destination screens………

30 august 1989 - Crich, Derbyshire, UK – National Tramway Museum. Paisley is close to Glasgow and trams ran through between the two cities until Glasgow eventually took over the entire system. This tram was built in 1919 and has been restored to original condition.

30 august 1989 - Crich, Derbyshire, UK – National Tramway Museum. London County Council ran its own extensive tramway system until London Transport was formed in 1933. This is a B Class car of 1903. On the museum tramway at Cliffside, single line tokens are being exchanged by the drivers so two trams can pass, whilst 106’s conductor is busy upstairs collecting fares and issuing tickets. This tram would originally have run with conduit current collection, not overhead wires.

Blackpool and Fleetwood ‘Toastrack’ 2 of 1898, so called because of its seat layout, has operated at Crich for many years and is currently undergoing a fairly major renovation. Sorry, but I missed the buses – a very nice Southdown Motor Services Leyland Royal Tiger and a Western (or Southern) National Bristol MW.

26 august 1982 - Crich, Derbyshire – National Tramway Museum. Ringhoffer car 180 was a gift from Hungarian tramway engineers in 1968. Research has shown that this is really Praha 266 and that it worked in Olomouc as their car 61 from 1955 until 1968. The original Praha livery would have been green and white. It no longer operates in museum service.

5 may 2006 - NTM Crich. Myślicie, że odnalezienie wagonu na działce to fajna sprawa? Heh… Ten wagon z pobliskiego Chesterfield służył przez prawie 50 lat za dom! Po zamknięciu sieci zaraz po wojnie tramwaj został kupiony przez lokalnego „miłośnika”, który rozebrał wagon na dwie części i przerobił na dom z prawdziwego zdarzenia! Na dolnym pokładzie urządził sobie kuchenkę opalaną węglem i pokój dzienny, pokład górny zaś zamienił na dwie sypialnie. Wodę czerpał ze studni wykopanej nieopodal. Później dom przekazał ciotce-samotniczce, która mieszkała w nim przez dobre 40-kilka lat, póki nie przeniosła się na starość do domu opieki. „Tramwaj” (inaczej jak w cudzysłowiu nie da się tego ująć…) przekazano zaś do Crich. Odrestaurowanie wagonu zajęło 4 lata i pochłonęło ok. 250 000 funtów. Dzięki temu, że znaleziono podobne podwozie wagon jest w tej chwili NA CHODZIE! I tą niesamowitą historyjką zakończę moją serię zdjęć z Crich Tramway Village. Jak dobrze pójdzie, to latem będę tam regularnie wpadał i pracował charytatywnie jako konduktor. Tymczasem sesja nagli – żegnajcie!

5 may 2006 - NTM Crich. Kolejny wagon wieżowy, pochodzący z Leeds. NTM miało o tyle szczęścia w porównaniu do innych muzeów, że zabierało co mogło z zamykanych lub dopiero co zamkniętych sieci tramwajowych. Podobne szczęście miało w Europie chyba tylko muzeum tramwajowe w Skjoldenæsholm w Danii, które hurtem przejęło tabor z zamykanego właśnie systemu w Kopenhadze.

5 may 2006 - NTM Crich, widok na warsztaty tramwajowe. Sorry za jakość, ale – co zresztą widać, fotka jest przez płot. Na lakierni stoi obecnie powojenny wagon z Leeds, który został wybudowany wykorzystując nowy typ nastawnika (ja się tam dokładnie nie znam, jaki), umożliwiający płynne przyspieszanie i hamowanie – stąd nazwa VAMBAC – Variable Automated Multinotch Braking and Acceleration Control. Zwróćcie uwagę, o ile wyżej jest zawieszona sieć trakcyjna dla tramwajów piętrowych.

5 may 2006 - NTM Crich, Village Terminus. Zaraz po odjeździe Reko na kraniec zajechał Toastrack. Konduktor sprawdza właśnie bilety. Przy wejściu do muzeum dostaje się starą monetę pensową jeszcze sprzed wprowadzenia systemu dziesiątkowego (dawniej 1 funt = 12 szylingów = ileśtam pensów), którą płaci się za bilet jednodniowy. Ciekawostką jest też to, że wagonowi nie trzeba ręcznie zmieniać kierunku pantografu – na obu krańcówkach funkcjonują trójkąty na sieci trakcyjnej, które same obracają kierunek rolki.

4 may 2006 - NTM Crich, przystanek końcowy w wiosce. Reko wygrzewa się w popołudniowym słoneczku zanim wyruszy kolejny raz w kierunku Glory Mine jako nauka jazdy. Żeby takie muzeum kiedyś w Polsce powstało… Na Śląsku na przykład – na terenach starych kopalni… Ech…

5 may 2006 - Potsdam, Nauener Tor :P No dobra, żartowałem… NTM Crich, Bowes-Lyon Bridge i Reko pod nim przejeżdżające. Na pierwszym planie zaś jedna z kilku jednoiglicowych zwrotnic na terenie muzeum. W tle zaś na górze wieżyczka kaplicy. Przez nią miejsce wygląda prawie jak Dover – białe klify, latarnia morska, tylko kurde coś szumu morza nie słychać – jedynie szum pantografów rolkowych po sieci!

2006 - NTM Crich. I wróciłem znowu do zajezdni :) Na zdjęciu wóz wieżowy nr 3, zbudowany własnym sumptem w warsztatach z części doczepki wieżowej z Blackpool. Ciągnięty/pchany jest przez zieloną lokomotywkę, również z Blackpoolu.

5 may 2006 - NTM Crich, odcinek wioska – Wakebridge. Po drodze tramwaj mija czynną do dziś odkrywkę kamieniołomu. Zakład został założony przez słynnego pioniera kolei George’a Stephensona, który potrzebował kamienia m.in. do obiektów inżynieryjnych na budowanych przez siebie liniach kolejowych. Jak nietrudno się domyśleć, tłuczeń dla trasy muzeum wyprodukowano też „po sąsiedzku”, kamieniołom za darmo utwardził też niektóre ścieżki na terenie muzeum.

5 may 2006 - NTM Crich, mijanka Wakebridge. Tak, to znowu ja :) Przedstawiony na zdjęciu wagon z Southampton pochodzi z 1905 r. i został pierwszym eksponatem NTM w latach 60. Gdy w 1955r. likwidowano sieć tramwajową w Southampton, grupa entuzjastów kupiła wagon za niewielką wówczas sumę 10 funtów. Po kilku latach, gdy „odkryto” Crich, wagon przetransportowano do muzeum, gdzie kursuje od 1964r. po zamontowaniu trakcji elektrycznej. Wagon jest wybitnie niski jak na warunki brytyjskie, ze względu na bramę Bargate w Southampton, pod którą przejeżdżały tramwaje. Pasażerowie musieli wówczas – według napisów na tramwaju – schylać głowy i uważać na nisko zawieszone przewody trakcyjne.

5 may 2006 - NTM Crich. Jeden z kilku kabrioletów z Blackpool – ten służył jako ruchome studio telewizyjne BBC razem z jego bliźniakiem 165. Tutaj mija mijankę Wakebridge, mniej więcej na 2/3 odległości od wioski. Znajduje się tutaj miejsce piknikowe (stąd zrobiłem zdjęcie), wystawa sprzętu górniczego i podstacja elektryczna, którą również można obejrzeć przez szklaną ścianę. Słupki przy trasie to element systemu zabezpieczenia odcinków jednokierunkowych. Zawieszone są na nich metalowe pierścienie (tzw. Neale’s ball czy Neale’s token), które zabierane są przez motorniczego i odwieszane na drugim końcu odcinka. Wstęp na odcinek ma oczywiście tylko wagon znajdujący się w posiadaniu pierścienia. Podony system stosowany jest do dziś z powodzeniem na wielu odcinkach sieci kolei indyjskich. Tam jednak „wymiana” odbywa się nierzadko przy prędkości ok. 60km/h i więcej. Nic – koniec limitu na dziś. Podoba się seryjka?

5 may 2006 - NTM Crich. Wagon 180 na krańcówce w „wiosce”. Większość budynków została tu przeniesiona i uratowana tym samym przed wyburzeniem. Znajdziemy m.in. pub ze Stoke on Trent, sklepik z cukierkami (oryginalny wystrój z lat 30.), inny z pamiątkami, wiktoriański pisuar uliczny, budki telefoniczne, stare wiaty, itp. Najważniejszym budynkiem jest jednak biblioteka tramwajowa, zawierająca tysiące dokumentów dotyczących wszystkich aspektów tramwajów – uchwały parlamentu brytyjskiego o budowie nowych sieci, rysunki techniczne, wycinki z gazet, dokumenty finansowe firm, mikrofilmy, zdjęcia, itp.

5 may 2006 - NTM Crich. W ruchu w dni powszednie są zawsze 3 wagony, co daje częstotliwość 10-minutową. Reko uruchamia się dodatkowo na życzenie osoby niepełnosprawnej. Dzisiaj akurat „Eric”, jak go nazywają nie kursował z wózkami, ale jako nauka jazdy.
UCC Feltham #331
5 may 2006 - NTM Crich. Wagon ten to prototyp popularnego w Londynie typu wagonów Feltham Class, charakteryzującego się wybrzuszeniem z przodu i z tyłu oraz wejściem pośrodku wagonu. W 1937 r. wagon ten trafił do Sunderland, a po zamknięciu tamtej sieci został uratowany przez muzeum w Crich.
