27 february 2017 - Denain, odc. Bellevue - Solange Tonini. Sieć w Valenciennes to kawałek GOP-u we Francji, czyli górnicze klimaty i międzymiastowe tramwaje. Tu podobieństwa się kończą. Niedawno rozbudowano sieć o 15 km, zaś w ich mieście partnerskim (Gliwicach) postąpiono na odwrót.

27 july 2008 - Valenciennes, Avenue Georges Pompidou. Potężny Alstom po zjechaniu z estakady znalazł się na rondzie, na którym znajduje się sygnalizacja świetlna w formie krzyża św. Andrzeja i czerwonych lamp, włączających się w zagadkowy sposób przed i w trakcie przejazdu tramwaju. Byłem tam w niedzielę i tramwaje kursowały dwa razy rzadziej niż w pozostałe dni, a sygnalizacja działała jakby wg rozkładu dnia powszedniego - włączała się wtedy, gdy tramwaju nie było na horyzoncie (a w tygodniu by jechał i mógł skorzystać z fazy).

Everything about this system was designed with a single, matching style to complement the trams. Platforms line up with the doors of the tram, so there are no steps to climb.

13 june 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) - Avenue de Saint-Amand. The old bridge over Valenciennes railway station is one of the few places where the Transvilles line runs in the street, and even here the tracks are separated from other traffic in one direction.

13 june 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) – Denain, Rue de Villars. Near the southern end of the line, tracks run in the centre of a local shopping street in a neat reservation. Much use is made of these grass-covered tracks - this is real grass, although from a distance it looks like Astroturf.

13 june 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) – Place de la Gare. The very sexy and futuristic trams of the new Transvilles interurban tramway have transformed this old industrial district of northern France. Modern tramways like this are very fashionable in France and many cities have opened new lines in recent years – money does not seem to be a problem. One of the Citadis vehicles glides up to the stop directly outside the main railway station.

The designers of the Valenciennes tramway seem to have learned from the mistakes of other cities – this line goes exactly where people wish to travel, without fancy subways or stations in the sky. Here, a tram runs directly through the main shopping streets between the railway station and the town hall.

13 june 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) – Solange Tonini. More empty fields on the line to Denain. These trams are very smart and were probably built locally – Alstom has a factory in Valenciennes. Like many of the ‘new’ French tramways, the design is stylish and attractive.

13 june 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) – Saint Waast. Near the Transvilles depot, a tram to Espace Villars running through a pleasant strip of parkland. The Valenciennes tramway makes extensive use of these grass-filled tracks, which look very nice but obviously need some maintenance – many cities in Poland have grass-filled tracks, too, of course, but these are not quite the same!

13 may 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) – Le Galibot. Look – no houses! The Valenciennes tramway is a true interurban, linking the city centre with the nearby town of Denain across this empty landscape. Here, there is no tram stop for nearly 2km – who would use it? Maybe a passing cow? Anyway, it makes a nice picture.

13 june 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) – Denain, Espace Villars. Valenciennes trams terminate in the centre of the busy little town of Denain, where there is cross-platform interchange to local bus lines. In former times, Valenciennes had a large, Vicinal-style tram network that ran between several towns in the region, and even reached the Belgian border to connect with their tram lines. I don’t know if the old trams ever came here, though - anyway, they were all gone by the 1960s.

13 june 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) – Chemin Vert. One of the new French tramways – every city in France wants to have one! Here in Valenciennes, the single, 28km line runs these silver-grey Alstom trams every few minutes, linking the city centre to the University and other districts. This tram is heading for the University.
