30 august 2008 - Oradea, pętla Nufărul. Doczepę o numerze 122 ciągnie wagon z numerem 22. Obydwa wagony wszystkich widzianych składów były też w jednakowych barwach. Widać, że w Oradei dba się o porządek.

30 august 2008 - Oradea, Sos. Borsului. Unikalna Tatra z kabinami po obydwu stronach za chwilę zacznie kurs na ogryzku trasy linii 1 do krańca Sinteza. W godzinach szczytu dojeżdżają tam tramwaje linii 1R i 1N jadące z centrum miasta, w innych porach kończą one trasę tutaj, a po jednym torze kursuje tam ta wyjątkowa Tatra.

7 october 2008 - Oradea, Romania – Salca. This T4D was the only one I saw in Oradea with a destination name actually displayed in the front screen. However, when I looked a little closer, I saw that the destination is shown as ‘’Alte Neustadt” (Magdeburg)! By the way – what sort of place is “Old New Town” – it’s either old or new, surely? Perhaps it loses something in translation.

7 october 2008 - Oradea, Romania – Nufarol. The third of the new Slemens ULF cars that had been delivered to Oradea at the time of my visit. Seven more were expected before the end of 2008. The OTL Depot Manager says that he prefers to keep Tatra T4s, so will presumably start using these new trams to replace the ex-Berlin KT4Ds.

7 october 2008 - Oradea, Romania – Sinteza. The unique, double-ended T4D, used to run an off-peak shuttle service over the western extremity of Line 1. Although there are turning loops at both ends, this one at Sinteza faces the wrong way to turn a tram coming from the west, so this tram reverses in this special siding track. Although there are controls at both ends, there are doors on only one side. Another oddity is that there is another T4 # 44 running in Oradea (there are two 43’s too). Note the two-way pantograph – also the only one in Oradea.

7 october 2008 - Oradea, Romania – Strada Republicii. Another ex-Berlin KT4 on Line ‘1 Black’, which is the anti-clockwise circuit of Line 1. Somehow, these trams don’t look quite the same without a destination screen at the top of the front window. The crush passenger load is typical, even though the service is very frequent.

7 october 2008 - Oradea, Romania – Piata 1 Decembrie. OTL surprised the tramway world when it bought a batch of these Siemens ULF cars, identical to those in Wien. Apart from an experimental low-floor car built in Bucuresti, these are the first new-generation trams in Romania and have generated much interest from other Romanian and Hungarian operators. However, I doubt that most Romanian tramways have the money to buy any, and they require well-maintained tracks on which to run – Oradea is quite good in this respect, so let’s hope they will be able to keep them in service.

7 october 2008 - Oradea, Romania – Piata 1 Decembri . Those ex-Berlin KT4-D cars pop up all over the place in Romania. Oradea has quite a large batch - here, car 224 runs towards the railway station on the ‘1 Red’ Line, which signifies a clockwise circuit round the city centre.

7 october 2008 - Oradea, Romania – Nufarol. An OTL tramway service van. The sign in the window of Tatra #8 says ‘DEFECTIONE TEHNICA’, which is the same in any language – it’s stuffed. A long queue of delayed trams is forming behind as passengers wander about aimlessly (as they always seem to do in these situations), waiting for something to happen.

7 october 2008 - Oradea, Romania – Strada Republicii . One for the Ikarus fans and also a TWB debut. A very smart Ikarus 256 Turbo Sport (that’s what it says on the front!) runs past the railway station on the 1455 scheduled service from Oradea to Diosig. This line runs four times daily. Andy Trans is a small local bus and coach operator.

7 october 2008 - Oradea, Romania – depou autocar/zajezdnia/bus depot. The other two surviving goods locomotives stand in the bus depot, in very poor condition. Locomotive #3 was built for a German light railway and came here after WWI, whereas #4 arrived in Oradea soon after the electrification of the tramway.

Preserved behind the depot is this nice little tramway freight locomotive. Three of these locomotives have survived - #5, shown here, has been cosmetically restored. The western extension of Line 1, which serves factories where only a limited service is needed outside peak hours, is often operated by solo car 44 which is an unusual Tatra T4, converted for double-ended operation (although there are doors on only one side). This tram normally waits in the loop which marks the normal end of Line 1 operation, then goes on to provide a shuttle service to the far terminus.

Ten new ultra-lowfloor trams, identical to those already running in Wien, are on order for the Oradea system, of which three are already in service. These are the first brand-new trams supplied to Romanian tramways for many years, except three prototypes built locally by RATB Bucuresti. The Oradea management are understandably very proud of these.

A mixture of ex-German Tatra cars runs the service, which includes an extended loop around the city centre. A goods service once operated alongside the passenger trams to link various factories to the railway station.
