Simmering Type M works tram #6133

6 may 2007 - Wien (AT) – tramway museum, Erdberg. Today, some more of the amazing Wien works trams. This is a specially-built tipping wagon from 1925 for carrying track materials.

WStB SS #6047

5 may 2007 - Wien (AT) – tramway museum, Erdberg. This purpose-built works tram was constructed in the workshops of the Stadtische Strassenbahnen (which later became WSV) in 1928, using a 1914 passenger car as the basis. It has been in the museum since 1972. The little house in the centre of the tram is a typical Wien feature.

Graz G1 #6412

6 may 2007 - Wien (AT) – tramway museum, Erdberg. Wien has so many work trams that they are divided into Types – this snowplough was a Type G machine. It began life in 1901 as a passenger tram built by Grazer Waggonfabrik and was rebuilt in 1958 by Graf und Stift into the form shown here.

Simmering Type BH works tram #6398

6 may 2007 - Wien (AT) – tramway museum, Erdberg. The amazing Wien tramway museum has an example of just about every type of tram to run in the city, including many works cars, of which my photos today show a small selection. This is a Type B tram built by Simmering in 1951, which ran in service until 1979 and then became a works car. It came to the museum in 2000.

15 may 2007 - Innsbruck (AT) – Maria-Theresien-Strasse. 2008 was the last year that trams used this main street – when I visited in 2007, the trolleybuses had just finished, too. Now, the classic Innsbruck trams are also being replaced by new low-floor vehicles. Ex-Bielefeld car 39 was one of the few city trams to keep its original IVB paint scheme.

Breda PCC #60

14 may 2007 - Innsbruck (AT) – TMB tramway museum. This Italian ‘Genoa’ type tram was built in 1943 for Belgrade, but was diverted to Innsbruck because of the war. It was unique, and the only modern tram in Innsbruck until the 1960s - in many respects it was still more technically-advanced than the new Lohner-built cars which then started to arrive. It has many PCC features. The museum group rescued this tram from Klagenfurt and have fully restored it to operating condition.

14 may 2007 - Innsbruck (AT) – Igls, Bahnhof. A close-up view of one of the tiny, ex-steam tram, trailer cars built in 1900 for the Innsbruck Mittelgebirgsbahn (the line to Igls). Only 5.8 metres long, they look really funny behind a large bogie tram. It was normal to run trains of up to four of these trailers – they lasted in service until 1981!

14 may 2007 - Innsbruck (AT) – zajezdnia/betriebshof Bergisel. A line of museum cars in the IVB depot. Snowbroom tram #200

14 may 2007 - Innsbruck (AT) – zajezdnia/betriebshof Bergisel. Snowbroom 200 is very old. I think that these days it is only used on the city streets – when the snow lays really deep along the mountain lines, something a lot more powerful is needed. Line 6 (Igls) is closed down all winter, anyway.

Plasser&Theurer #22

14 may 2007 - Innsbruck (AT) – Igls, Bahnhof. IVB Innsbruck has this huge works tram and two matching trailers, all built by the Austrian Plasser & Theurer company. It looks as though it’s designed to go off along the remote Innsbruck mountain lines for several days at a time in the deep winter snow – it has comfortable crew accommodation and even a little wind gauge on the roof. Here at Igls, it dwarfs the Deuwag GT8 alongside.

Wien Type Z tram #637

9 may 2007 - Graz (AT) – Tramway Museum. An ex-Third Avenue (New York) tram which came to Wien after WW2. These are very wide trams and could only operate on certain streets in Wien. I guess they have the same problem operating it here, although the museum has a very good relationship with Graz Tramways and runs regular trips from the museum with some of its other trams. Hidden just behind is another wartime acquisition – a 1909 tram from the Rheinbahn in Dusseldorf, Germany.

9 may 2007 - Graz (AT) – Tramway Museum, Mariatrost. This nice little museum stands at the end of Graz Line 1 and was once the depot of the independent, metre gauge Mariatrosterbahn (some of whose trams went to Lodz). Here are a 1944 Wien Type K car, a Munchen Type G of 1948 and a 1943 three-axle Amsterdam car -the Dutch called this tram type a ‘bloedneus’, or ‘nosebleed’, for obvious reasons! I have no idea how it finished up here in Austria. Some of these trams may not remain here much longer, as I think the museum wishes to concentrate on keeping just Austrian trams.
