Duewag GT8ZR #84

14 may 2007 - Innsbruck, Austria – Bergisel. Under some SERIOUS overhead wiring, a Stubaitalbahn service from Fulpmes comes through the IVB depot yard, having descended the steep ramp in the background. This is the only connection, as the Stubaitalbahn was a separate, high voltage line terminating here and it is only in recent years it has been linked to the city tramways. The Innsbruck trolleybus lines closed in Spring 2007 – the overhead wire engineers were very happy……….

14 may 2007 - Innsbruck, Austria – Muhlsee. Never get off a tram here unless you fancy a long wait! Muhlsee is a little halt on the way to Igls on the scenic Line 6. Except at peak times, just one tram runs an hourly service on this line, which is only open during the summer months.

14 may 2007 - Fulpmes, Austria. The Stubaitalbahn station at Fulpmes is as far as a tram can go along the valley. This picture show why - huge mountains block the way on all sides.

14 may 2007 - Fulpmes, Austria – At the pretty little Stubaitalbahn station, GT8 car 83 waits with a morning service to Innsbruck. Until earlier this year, IVB Innsbruck was an all-Deuwag operation, but low-floor cars are now creeping in to replace many of these attractive and well-maintained cars.

Graz GM #5

12 may 2007 - Gmunden, Austria – Kuferkelle. The other historic car at Gmunden is this 1911 Graz-built tram. Here it climbs steadily along narrow back streets, on the way up from the lake to the railway station – another very squeezy tram place!

Graz Pöstlingberg Sommertriebwagen #100

12 may 2007 - Gmunden, Austria – Gmundner Keramik. Another view of car 100 shows just how very tiny it is. Note the bow collector for electrical current and the curtains that can be drawn across if it rains. Any one of these gentlemen could be the driver - I hope they can agree who it is, before they reach the big hill down to the lake…….

Graz Pöstlingberg Sommertriebwagen #100

12 may 2007 - Gmunden, Austria – Bahnhofstrasse. Open ‘toastrack’ tram 100 is one of the three original open cars of the Postlingbergbahn at Linz. It is now based here and used for special trips, like this evening tour.

Lohner T4 #8

12 may 2007 - Gmunden, Austria - Alois-Kaltenbruner-Strasse. This tiny 2.3km long tramway, owned by the famous Stern und Hafferl company, has run since 1894 from Gmunden railway station, down to the town centre on a maximum gradient of 10%. Car 8, seen near the top of the hill, is a genuine Austrian Lohner from 1961. A modern, low-floor Flexity Outlook tram has recently been tested in Gmunden – is nothing sacred?

7 may 2007 - Baden, Austria – Waltersdorferstrasse. Car 402 is a different and later design. What a strange paint scheme – it looks like someone dropped a paint tin on the roof. Ugh! These new trams also look a little odd running together with the classic Deuwag-style cars but this is deliberate, as the new trams have low floors, but the older cars don’t.

7 may 2007 - Baden, Austria – Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Ring. In Baden, the interurban trams run on single track in the gutter as far as the city limits, where the high speed tracks begin – just like all those American interurban lines of the 1920s and 1930s. Classic stuff!

7 may 2007 - Baden, Austria – Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Ring. Directly on leaving the WLB terminus, trams run into the centre of the street. 6 may 2007 - Type G4 of 1903 by Grazer Waggonfabrik rebuilt 1948 by Waggonfabrik Simmering. Wien/Vienna – Erdberg tramway museum. The wonderful Wien tramway museum is one of the finest in the world (if not THE finest?). The city has kept a great many old vehicles and, as well as opening their buildings to the public, operates trams regularly throughout the year. Their collection is over 100 vehicles, all kept under cover in an old tram depot. Every tram fan should try to go there! This picture shows just a small part of one depot building.

Graz tram #2008

9 may 2007 - Graz, Austria – tramway museum Mariatrost. An amazing survivor. This Lodz works car was built in 1898 for the independent Mariatrosterbahn and operated from this exact spot until 1942. The line was then re-gauged and connected to the city tramways and several of the unwanted metre gauge cars were sent to Lodz. 2008 became a works car and was eventually taken back to Graz, where it is complete but dismantled at the Graz Tramway Museum. In the corner is a little photo of the car working in Lodz (author unknown).

ESG T2 #XVI

11 may 2007 - Linz, Austria, Postlingbergbahn. The lower terminus – city trams stop just outside. In a supreme act of official vandalism, all this has been swept away so that low-floor trams can run up the Postlingberg directly from Linz city centre. The line is currently closed and will reopen next year with new 900mm tracks and new trams. I think that just one or two of these old trams will remain for tourists, somehow modernised and re-gauged.

11 may 2007 - Linz, Austria – Postlingbergbahn. Two two-car trains pass at one of the intermediate stops. The hooks on the front and rear of each tram are to carry prams and pushchairs. One odd feature of the Postlingbergbahn is the numbering system, using Roman numerals.

11 may 2007 - Linz, Austria – Postlingbergbahn. The Postlingbergbahn is a separate, metre-gauge line to the top of a hill.
