These cars remind me very much of the Metropolitan Line ‘A’ Stock trains in London. The Lisboa system is third-rail, 750v DC and runs on standard gauge.

Had I known we had no photos, I would have taken many more. This is one of the suburban stations on the Blue Line – the art work above the platforms lights up as trains pass by. Brill Americano #275

19 march 2010 - Porto (PT) – Foz. A Porto bogie car. STCP once had many bogie trams, but most have now gone and just a few remain for special museum services. Car 275 was built locally but is typical of the Brill ‘semi-convertible’ design. As Porto is a standard-gauge tramway, their cars could be much bigger than the little 900mm and metre-gauge trams in other Portuguese cities. Bogie trams can only use the riverside line, so don’t now get much use.

19 march 2010 - Porto (PT) – Carmo. A Porto museum tram on the recently rebuilt line leading to the upper city. The extent of these new tracks can be seen in the photo. Three public routes are operated, but only run about every 30 minutes between 0900 and 1700, so these aren’t really a serious means of transport but are really just for visitors, who can also ride on a special tourist tram that runs once an hour. Car 191 comes from the excellent museum at Massarelos depot and is an original 1912 American-built Brill. Because of the steep gradients, only two-axle cars are allowed up here.

CCFP Brill-28 #205

19 march 2010 - Porto (PT) – Batalha. Like tramways in other Portuguese cities, Porto almost closed down completely and just one short line along the banks of the Douro river survived - many of the old trams on American and British trucks were sold to museums. Everyone thought the trams were finished, but there was a sudden change of policy a few years ago and the riverside line was rebuilt and extended. Now, new lines have brought the trams back to the city centre and further extensions are planned (although it seems the money has run out for the time being). Tram 205 is a 1930s rebuild of an earlier car but retains its clerestory roof.

A 500 Series ‘Remodelado’ and #735 stand together at the terminal loop, showing the differences. 500 Series cars are single ended, have a modern and much heavier truck, a pantograph and trolley pole and dummy offside doors that don’t open. The remaining un-rebuilt 700 Series trams have identical bodies (which were used to make the 500s) but are double ended and have a lighter Maley and Taunton British-built truck of traditional 1930s design.

This is a 700 Class tram – not a Class 500 ‘Remodolado’ – so is double-ended and has only a trolley pole. Brill Crossbench tram #1

21 march 2010 - Sintra (PT). The 14 km long, metre-gauge Sintra-Atlantico tramway opened in 1904 with the original trams still working there today. The line actually closed down several times in the past fifty years, but somehow managed to survive and a major rebuilding is almost complete, with a new depot and improved track. It runs between Sintra town and the little seaside village of Praia das Macas along a hilly and winding route, mostly along the side of the road. Almost all the rolling stock, built by Brill of Philadelphia, is over 100 years old and (despite some steep gradients) is hand braked only. Here in the new depot are 1903 trams 1 and 7, open crossbench cars, and #4 which was rebuilt locally from an identical car. At the time of my visit there was no electricity, but the line will reopen for business in April – I’ll certainly be back! (this picture for af_robert).

Birney Safety Car #15

18 march 2010 - Coimbra (PT) – depot/zajezdnia Guarda-Inglese. A Coimbra tram. The city ran metre-gauge trams until 1980, when trolleybuses (first introduced here in 1947) took over the remaining routes. By this time, all the trams were very old, but kept in good condition – what a pity that some of the lines didn’t survive just a few more years, as they would certainly now still be operating. This one is an extremely rare type – a Birney Safety Car built by Brill of Philadelphia in 1928 and one of just five to reach Europe. Many smaller cities in USA had trams exactly like these.

There were once quite a few of these, but now they have mostly gone to museums. The vast building behind is the Jeronimos monastery. This picture didn’t go according to plan – three of us arranged to be picked up as soon as the tram reached us, but the driver didn’t see us, so we had to quickly find a taxi and say the immortal words “Follow that tram”.

It normally lives in the Carris museum and only comes out on very special occasions – and only when it isn’t raining (this isn’t so much for the tram’s benefit, but because the drivers don’t like getting wet!). It’s an original Brill summer car from 1902 and now the only one remaining.

It has already come down the line from Graca, a steep descent by any normal standards, and now simply drops off the end of the world – see the angle on the wall behind the post box (and it gets even steeper). These ‘Remodolado’ trams use old bodies mounted on new underframes and are very powerful – they just sail up these remarkable gradients like mountain goats.
