Duewag GT6 #878

21 february 2010 - Alexandria, Abo El Dardaa. You try to take a decent photo of a Duewag and there we go - some stupid cow wanders into the picture...

Duewag GT6 #806

21 february 2010 - Alexandria, Sherif street. A procession of Duewags slowly runs down an interesting portion of the network - the traffic runs here only one-way (look on the left side). Since Moharram Bey street is being reconstructed, almost all the routes on the western side of the network terminate on a single track loop next to the rail station. As you can see large traffic jams occur.

21 february 2010 - Alexandria, Kasr El Tin. And there we go - a derailment. Ah well - sh... happens.

Kinki Sharyo Alexandria #122

21 february 2010 - Alexandria, Kasr El Tin. The tram is running along the boulevard by the sea, away from the naval dockyards. Overlooking everything is the ever present Khosny.

Ganz / Düwag #1202

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, El Nozha loop. One of the more interesting loops I have seen in my life. When it was decided that the shunt was not enough, the middle of the loop was filled by a block of flats. The tram thus turns around in a four-metre wide channel between a block of flats and a wall.

Ganz / Düwag #1207

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Italy. The car is turning around on the triangle and is returning towards El Nozha. As you can see, a lot of very interesting things happened here previously.

Ganz / Düwag #1227

20 february 2010 - Alexandria, Tomourt. Due to trackworks between the railway station and Moharram Bey depot, the section between Moharram Bey and El Nozha was served by two shuttle routes. From Moharram Bey depot to Italy there is nowhere to switch tracks, so there are two trams shuttling back and forth, one on each track (one of these is in this picture). At Italy there is a triangle, where the shuttles to El Nozha turn around.

Kinki Sharyo Alexandria #1113

20 february 2010 - Alexandria, Ramleh square. A "dual-system" tram on route 35 (San Stefano - Ras El Tin) has just arrived at the meeting point of the Ramleh and Medina networks. The driver has just lowered the pantograph and raised the trolley pole, and will soon be departing towards Ras El Tin.

Kinki Sharyo DD #218

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Mustafa Kamel. A double-decker is traversing a series of points outside the depot, so it can continue on route 1 towards Ramleh square. As you can see the little passengers upstairs are frantically trying to get into the frame.

Kinki Sharyo #160

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Victoria (El Nasr) terminus. A three-car train on route 1 has just arrived at the outer terminus of the line. The route was built by the Belgians in 1863, and was initially operated as a steam railway.

Kinki Sharyo #124

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Elaskandar Elakbar. Let's go through a quick tour of the streets of Alexandria. First and foremost, the Ramleh lines.

Duewag GT6 #887

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Moharram Bey depot. And for my 1400th picture - a Duewag in its winter sleep basking in the lovely light from the roof.

Ganz / Düwag #1217

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Moharram Bey depot. And for dessert - the interior of the Ganz-Duewag - this time a view well known to the inhabitants of Budapest.

Ganz / Düwag #1218

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Moharram Bey depot. The Ganz-Duewag car's dashboard - containing large amounts of the plastic that all ikarus users know well.

Newag CF120T #707

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Moharram Bey depot. This interesting technical vehicle (probably a rail grinder) was standing somewhere in the back of the depot hall. Interestingly enough, the car looked much better than all the others (at least on the outside).

Ganz / Düwag #1224

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Moharram Bey depot. Because the Medina network was split in two due to track renewals, the Ganz-Duewags (except for one pair) were moved to Moharram Bey depot, so that they would work the Moharram Bey - Nozha shuttle.

Duewag GT6 #848

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Moharram Bey depot this time around. The depots in Alexandria are easily visible on Google Maps - you just can't miss the fluorescent blue roofs.

Bogie tram #601

20 february 2010 - Alexandria, Mustafa Kamel depot. And at the end of our trip around this depot - a historical tramcar, which you can ride along route number 1 for one Egyptian pound. Sadly - the tram had a problem with its bogies whilst we were there so we couldn't take a ride with it.

Kinki Sharyo #156

20 february 2010 - Alexandria, Mustafa Kamel depot. This hall had really lovely lighting - windows almost on the roof, covered in red foil. And a three-car tram hoisted on the jacks.

Kinki Sharyo DD #?

20 february 2010 - Alexandria, Mustafa Kamel depot. Somewhere in the spare parts section in the back of the hall we discovered that some workers have some hidden talents.

Kinki Sharyo #185

20 february 2010 - Alexandria, Mustafa Kamel depot. Apologies for the pantograph, but the light... I couldn't resist.

Kinki Sharyo #172

20 february 2010 - Alexandria, Mustafa Kamel depot. Deeper in the depot building we found a car on jacks. As you can see the floor of the depot looks like a farmyard soaked with oil.

Kinki Sharyo #166

20 february 2010 - Alexandria, Mustafa Kamel depot. And back to looking at Alexandria depots - now we're in the Ramleh lines depot. Because Egypt is a rather warm country, the depots are rather dark on the inside - thanks to which there are dramatic light conditions inside.

Eltramco Ramzes I #3443

20 february 2010 - Alexandria, in front of Karmuz depot. And a little bonus, very close to the hearts of Poles, I'm sure :)

Duewag GT6 #849

20 february 2010 - Alexandria, Karmuz depot. And now a quick look at the track field. As you can see on the left in the background - nothing gets wasted around here!

Duewag GT6 #872

20 february 2010 - Alexandria, Karmuz depot. And here we have an example of Egyptian health and safety regulations - one of the mechanics is welding car 872. No protective mask, no gloves - as if he was pouring water out of a hose...

Duewag GT6 #850

20 february 2010 - Alexandria, Karmuz depot. Since the president of Egypt decided to disallow the import of used tram cars, Alexandria has a bit of a problem. On one hand there is neither any money to buy new low-floor trams nor to modernise the tracks accordingly; on the other hand they can't buy used trams which would be appropriate for this network. The only solution - until Khosny Mubarak either changes his mind or kicks the bucket - is to modernise existing vehicles. You are therefore looking at the skelet of a Duewag built locally.

Kinki Sharyo Alexandria #1108

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Karmuz depot. Alexandria has two tram networks. One of them, called Ramleh lines, is basically one line that runs along the coast. The other (Medina) is the rest of the city tram network. On the Ramleh lines trams use normal pantographs, on the Medina line they still have trolley poles. Two routes (25 and 36) run on both networks - for these APTA rebuilt some Kinki Sharyo cars by adding pantographs.

Kinki Sharyo Alexandria #1107

19 february 2010 - Aleksandria, zajezdnia Karmuz. Proste, prawda?

Duewag GT6 #872

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Karmuz depot. One of the Duewags dropped its jaw when it saw us...

Duewag GT6 #826

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Karmuz depot. The next point of call: a Duewag on jacks and its bogies standing next to it.

Duewag GT6 #854

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Karmuz depot. Let's start with a little tour of the depot with a little scene with Two-and-a-Half Duewags in it :)

Tatra K5AR #2021

20 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) – Muharram Bey. The Ganz cars are confined to a line in the outer suburbs of Alexandria, so aren’t seen in the city centre. This is another chaotic market area where the trams nose along through the stalls and street traders.

Ganz / Düwag #1230

20 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) – Muharram Bey. A typical Alexandria street. Ganz cars 1230+1229 head towards the city centre. The destination display permanently says ‘Alexandria’ – about as useful as an ashtray on a motor cycle.

Ganz / Düwag #1203

20 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) – depot/zajezdnia Muharram Bey. Some pictures today for our Hungarian friends. The thirty attractive Ganz/Düwag trams are the newest in the Alexandria city fleet (although now twenty-five years old). They’ve worn very well, still look quite modern and are smooth and comfortable to ride in. I don’t know of any others built to this design – presumably this was a special order, just for Alexandria? Cars 1203+1204 stand in the small Muharram Bey depot.

4-wh tower wagon

20 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) – Shari El-Khedeiwi. The next day, the market has vanished and you can see the works tram clearly, including the nice illustration of a Düwag on the side. The metal supports are a little strange – perhaps this was once used as an electrical sub-station? Now it seems it is just a tool store for the more modern motor tower wagon permanently parked just behind.

4-wh tower wagon

19 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) – Shari El-Khedeiwi. Parked on a little siding here is an old Belgian tram converted into a tower wagon. It looks like it hasn’t moved in years. Now it makes a useful market stall! It has the cute upstairs balcony that seems to be an Alexandria speciality.

Duewag GT6 #835

19 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) – Shari El-Khedeiwi. On Fridays this street is used for a large flea market, where you can buy all kinds of old junk. Like elsewhere in Egypt, the stalls take up almost the entire road – including the tram in places. Even the horse and cart are probably for sale.

Bogie tram #601

20 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) – depot/zajezdnia Mustafa Kamel. Inside #601. This tram is probably not as old as it first appears, as it has Alsthom controllers – 1960s perhaps?

Bogie tram #601

20 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) – depot/zajezdnia Mustafa Kamel. The Ramleh interurban line has kept this bogie tram from an earlier generation of cars and runs it regularly in normal service, principally for tourists. Local people love to use it, however, and will happily pay the extra fare (four times the normal price) to ride on it.

Duewag GT6 #881

19 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Masr. Rail/tram interchange, Egyptian style. The main Alexandria railway station is just across the street from here. You can sit outside the cafe on the right and watch a continual procession of old Düwags (but please don't drink the water).

Duewag GT6 #885

19 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - depot/zajezdnia Karmus. Rather battered-looking #885 creeps out of the depot yard. It was being used as a works car at the time - probably in the queue for an overhaul and repaint. APTA say that these old Düwags may run here for another ten years.

Duewag GT6 #807

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Karmuz depot. And here we have a Duewag in all its glory - as you can see it has lost its second door in Egypt. Alexandria employs seated conductors - you enter the car using the rear door, pay for your ride, and exit via the other two doors.

Duewag GT6 #864

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Karmuz loop. The terminus next to the depot houses a few tracks where cars are parked overnight. We had just made it in time to see the vehicles leaving for their morning shifts. On the right you can see some sort of platform works car.

Duewag GT6 #891

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Karmuz terminus. And so we made it to the tram loop, next door to one of the three tram depots in Alexandria. The attitude of the staff towards us couldn't be more different than in Cairo - seeing the Danish guys they immediately bade us welcome, invited us for tea, and showed us around the whole depot. Oh, and all they wanted in return were keyrings from Skjoldenaesholm. If you would thus like to walk around the tram depots in Alexandria, I suggest investing a bit of money in producing keyrings with Duewags - satisfaction is guaranteed :)

Duewag GT6 #878

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Abo El Dardaa street. On a quiet Friday morning (it's a holiday in Islam after all) an ex-Copenhagen Duewag runs into the centre to find a group of European tourists at the terminus, who are clicking pictures wildly like the Japanese on speed :) Since one of these tourists happened to be the head of the Danish Tram Museum in Skjoldenaesholm (a local celebrity), once we entered the vehicle we were treated to a quick lesson in driving for the second time in Egypt. The lesson would have been more interesting though, had it not been for the nervous driver, who did not let us go beyond the series notches...

Duewag GT6 #884

20 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Masr. Another chaotic scene in the markets near the railway station. Every square metre is covered with goods for sale (even between the tram tracks). The man with the jug is selling drinks of water through the tram windows as they pass - pure River Nile water, no doubt - lovely! The other goon in front became a real problem here, standing in all our photos - he almost got his face re-arranged by an English fist.

Duewag GT6 #878

19 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Shari Abi ed Darda. A quiet moment in Alexandria (Friday morning, which is a holy day). It is very rare to find a city tram not surrounded by traffic. This was a good chance for us all to test our tram driving skills, complete with Egyptian passengers. The conductor wears the standard Alexandria Tramways uniform!

Garden shed bus

16 february 2010 - Giza (EG) - Media City. OK, you choose a name for this vehicle! The Media City complex includes a theme park, which operates tours of the film studios for visitors. Transport is provided by this strange contraption. The driver (like all drivers in Egypt) races round at top speed, so I don't think the visitors have time to see anything much!

18 february 2010 - Cairo. Where? Well, that's a good question. Openstreetmap quotes the name of the street as Al-Montazah, Google as El Shaheed Loaa Mahmoud Adel, whereas a map created in 2000 probably for Blickpunkt Strassenbahn shows the terminus as Midan Alf Maskan. Sod this. Let's wave goodbye to Cairo, the next pictures will be from Alexandria!

18 february 2010 - Cairo, Midan Roxy. A pretty full two-car tram prepares to enter the final section of its journey to Ramses square, which is on totally segregated track.

Kinki Sharyo #1030

18 february 2010 - Cairo, El Nouzha. A Heliopolis Metro tram has just arrived at this terminus, whereas a route 32 car on the right is departing towards Midan Al-Sayyid Al-Mirghani. You can see the subtle differences between the exterior appearance of the "metro" and "city" cars.

Kinki Sharyo #1012

18 february 2010 - Cairo, corner of Osman Ibn Afan and Abd El Aziz Fahmy streets. A three-car rusty old banger leaves the outskirts of Heliopolis on a nearly hour-long journey to central Cairo. The speeds achieved by these cars are - despite the terrible state of the tracks - not too bad at all, and thanks to segregated tracks the vehicles do not have to stand in the huge traffic jams. Sadly - the neglect and the state of disrepair of the vehicles means, that you sometimes need to stand a good 45 minutes at the stop before the next tram comes.

Kinki Sharyo #6068

18 february 2010 - Cairo, outside Port Said depot. Cars 6068+6067 have just traversed the 2km-long service track between El Matariya and the depot, and are now at the depot gates. As a CTA worker met outside the depot said, the great Port Said depot (see satellite picture) only runs around 17 trams a day - which works out to 1-2 per route. And - sadly - the cars do tend appear at the stops in rather irregular intervals. Also, despite there being quite a few passengers riding in them, buses running on parallel routes appear far more crowded.

Kinki Sharyo Cairo #4088

18 february 2010 - Cairo, Port Said depot. As I had mentioned previously, Cairo still has two functioning tram depots. The Heliopolis depot runs the Heliopolis Metro lines, whereas the Port Said depot runs the remainder of the Heliopolis routes. Sadly, after long negotiations, we were refused entry to the depot. However - as in Helwan - the first available tramcar was rolled out for us.

Kinki Sharyo #6010

18 february 2010 - Cairo, El Matariya. We began our last day in Cairo with bad news - the CTA denied us access to the tram depots, because we were tourists, not businessmen. Nevertheless we decided that it would be worth giving it a shot, so we set off for Port Said depot to see what we could get out of the guys at the gate. We started our trip at El Matariya.

Kinki Sharyo #6029

17 february 2010 - Cairo, Midan Ismaillia. And a close-up of the coupling between the two cars. What is interesting is that despite a complete lack of chains or anything like that between the two cars we did not see anyone who fancied a free ride between the cars. This is probably down to two things - the completely horrible state of the tracks and the fact, that the trams run through a rather affluent part of the city, whose inhabitants don't feel the need to risk their lives to save 50 piastre (6p) for the ticket...

Kinki Sharyo #6029

17 july 2010 - Cairo, Midan Ismaillia. A route 5 tram (El Matariya - Midan Ismaillia - the shortest in Cairo) has just arrived at the terminus. The new trackbed suggests a reactivation of the curve connecting the no. 5 on Omar Ibn El Khatab street with Osman Ibn Afan street where a route of the Heliopolis Metro runs. However, given the state and the perspectives of the Cairo network, this is a step towards the rationalisation of the network when further sections of it will be taken out of use.
