Tatra/Modertrans RT6 MF06AC #405

27 august 2011 - Poznań, Forteczna street tram depot. The "Moderus Tatrus" (as we like to call it) is a heavily rebuilt Tatra RT6N1 from Prague, which was delivered to MPK Poznań in lieu of the original vehicle no. 405, which currently is probably lying around in pieces somewhere in the Modertrans workshops. The 405" as one should probably call it is seen here shortly after delivery from Modertrans and is awaiting a chance to perform some test runs before being formally handed over to the MPK.

19 june 2010 - London (Redbridge), Hainault Street, Ilford bus terminus. Straszny put up so many pictures of Egyptian buses lately, so I figured I'll throw in one myself. MCV makes low-floor bodies for the UK market and they're not so bad at it either. They've even managed to create a double-deck model, which isn't selling too well at the moment - mainly because the surge in demand for double-deckers due to Boris's bendybus withdrawal is now over. When it comes to single deckers, MCV makes bodies for MAN and Dart chassis.

Much has changed in Blackpool in the last few years. In order to make the system look like a proper light rail line, half of the stops were removed, 16 low-floor Flexity Outlook 2 cars were ordered, a new depot (co-financed by the EU) was built and - sadly - some of the old tramcars were sold off (the remainder will run a tourist service between Blackpool and Bispham). Car 723 will luckily stay here. Apologies for the quality, but the weather situation wasn't exactly pretty at the time.

DAF DB250 / Plaxton President #DLP205

26 june 2010 - City of London, Tower Hill. And at the end of our little look at tourist buses we have this here Plaxton. Original Tour is part of the Arriva Group, so it's not too surprising that they take over significant numbers of buses from the regular fleet. Reconstructing a bus for tourist use involves (besides taking off the top deck): removing the middle door, changing seats for hard ones, re-profiling the top deck and drilling little holes in the floor of the top deck to channel away the rainwater. Even though these buses are low-floor and adapted to carry disabled people, I've never seen anyone with a wheelchair on them. Little wonder, too - you can't take the wheelchair onto the top deck, and what's the point of paying 20-something quid to ride on the bottom deck if you can do that for free with a regular bus?

Leyland Olympian / Alexander RH #MBH357

26 june 2010 - City of London, Tower Hill. Time for a short look at the tourist buses. Most of these used to be normal double-deckers, which had their roof chopped off in old age and sent to roam the tourist routes. This one used to run in Hong Kong, and can be easily recognised by having three axles, as Hong Kong has more strict rules regarding axle loads. Nonetheless, a dwindling pool of old buses, as well as tighter emissions norms have made it necessary for these companies to purchase new buses, such as the Optare Visionaire-bodied bus behind.

Volvo B9TL / Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 #WVL340

19 june 2012 - London (Barking & Dagenham), Chequers Lane. This is one of the disadvantages of a 100% tendering system. Normally you would send the oldest stuff you have to this place - something a year or two before it hits the burner. But not here - in London you condemn brand new double-deckers to go to places like this every 12 years.

They belonged to a company called Silver Star, which painted their buses in a rather military scheme to reflect the fact, that it served a number of British Army bases around Salisbury. On the left we have a double-decker Atlantean for more local duties, on the right a Leyland Tiger Cub which used to ply the intercity route between Salisbury and London.

Leyland Atlantean / MCW #LYF307D

11 april 2010 - Wisley Airfield, Cobham Bus Rally. BOAC stands for British Overseas Airways Corporation - the airline which merged in 1974 with British European Airways to form British Airways. Before the construction of the Piccadilly Line extension to Heathrow in 1973, airlines took it upon themselves to ferry passengers to the airport terminal. As you can see in the photo, the bus has comfortable, high-back seats. With the engine in the rear, it was possible to lower the floor, whereas the rear of the downstairs compartment was converted to luggage space. With time, as flying became less elitist, airlines stopped providing their own dedicated services. Passengers had to make their way to Heathrow by coaches, the tube or the Airbus, two London Transport operated express routes, which connected the airport with the railway termini in the centre. The Airbus was scrapped only after the construction of the rail line to Heathrow.

Dennis 4-tone / Dodson #D142

11 april 2010 - Wisley Airfield, Cobham Bus Rally. In 1922 the bus operations in London were deregulated, thanks to which over 200 companies were created. Some grew in size quite handsomely, some had only one bus. This four-tonne double decker with a wooden body was built for one of the bigger operators, which then competed with the municipally owned tramways. Due to the crisis of the 1930s, the London Passenger Transport Board was created in 1933 and created some order in the market - sadly they also later caused the demise of the classic tramway in London. This bus never got to see this moment - the last mention of it is from 1932. It was discovered in some garden in 1971 and restored. The museum acquired it in 1984.

Today the main tasks of the trolleybuses are to ferry the people living in the Brandenburgisches Viertel estate to the train station and the town centre. In this picture the electric motor of the display is buzzing away while trying to change the destination displayed. Overall it's a pretty nice little network, but why do they insist on buying buses with four doors, when you can only enter in the front?

7 april 2010 - Eberswalde, Ostend loop. While trying to ride on the second line, I was chatted up by the driver of the vehicle, after I took its photo. He turned out to be a fan. We ended up with a long discussion about trolleybuses and the history of the town - and when we got to the terminus we started playing around with the destination display. Finow Post is where they were planning to erect the wires up to the mid-90s. I think that with regard to network extensions, the BBG is satisfied with the current status quo.
