Kassel 0-4-0 #7

6 september 2008 - Darmstadt, Germany - Alsbach: The lovely steam tram and its train pose for photographs near the end of the long route from central Darmstadt. Although the steam tram does not run very often, this trip is one of the best experiences you can have with your clothes on - if you have the chance, you should try it!

6 september 2008 - Darmstadt, Germany - Heidelberger Landstrasse, Seeheim: A very tight spot in Seeheim village street, just passing a bar - I don`t know why we just drive past without stopping for a beer, but perhaps the tram driver was in a hurry? The buidings are almost close enough to touch from the steam tram.

Kassel 0-4-0 #7

6 september 2008 - Darmstadt, Germany - Heidelberger Landstrasse: The steam tram where the tracks, shared with the normal electric service, run close to a main road. The open trailer was built originally for the famous OEG system around Mannheim.

Kassel 0-4-0 #7

6 september 2008 - Darmstadt, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Frankenstein: A very special trip for enthusiasts with the historic steam tram train in Darmstadt, here being prepared in the depot yard ready for the journey. The locomotive began life in 1917 with an industrial user and originally ran on 900mm gauge, altered when it came here in 1957. A selection of suitable trailers has also been assembled over the years.

DWA NGT8 #1109

Tatra T4D #2149

31 july 2004 - Leipzig Germany - Hauptbahnhof: One of the huge fleet of Tatra T4s leading a three car train outside the railway station. As well as T4 motor cars, many of the second and third cars in Leipzig trains were `proper` T4 trailers, although this particular set is formed of two motors and one trailer. Car #2149 left here in 2010 for further operation in Sofia.

DWA NGT8 #1126

31 july 2004 - Leipzig, Germany - Hauptbahnhof: I made an extremely quick visit to Leipzig in 2004, at a time when several newer types of tram had begun to take over from the vast fleet of Tatra T4s used on this massive network. Here is the impressive four-track layout directly outside the main railway station. Many trams ran in three car formations and were very fast, a bit like those in Warszawa. You needed to take great care walking here! A rather ugly Duewag NGT8 of 1995 is nearest the camera.

Siemens Combino Duo #202

27 july 2004 - Nordhausen, Germany - Ilfeld: Dual mode Combino at Ilfeld, nearly 11km away from the nearest electric tramway line. It will run just one stop further, where there is a busy hospital, then retrace its steps back to the city in diesel mode before continuing on through the city as a conventional tram.

Siemens Combino Duo #203

27 july 2004 - Nordhausen, Germany - Bahnhofstrasse: Dual mode Combino #203 outside the railway station, changing ends to run along the Harzquerbahn. Although just a small-scale operation, these tram trains have boosted the infrequent servie on the railway and carry quite a few passengers to Ilfeld and to a hospital just beyond - it shows what can be achieved at relatively low cost.

Siemens Combino Duo #202

27 july 2004 - Nordhausen, Germany - Oskar-Cohn-Strasse: A reason for tram enthusiasts to visit this small system in 2004 was the brand new tram-train operation along the metre gauge Harzquerbahn railway for 110km to the village of Ilfeld, operated by three Combino trams in both electric and diesel modes. Here we see dual mode #202 working away from the wires on a linking track between the tramway and the adjacent railway. On its journey, the tram will share tracks with both diesel and steam trains and even obey semaphore signals along the way.

Gotha T57 #118

29 july 2004 - Jena, Germany - Karl-Liebknecht Strasse: Another go-anywhere tram was Jena #118, which had worked at Gera, Nordhausen and Gorlitz before finishing its career at Jena. Nearly all the Gotha trams still being used in Jena had an interesting and varied history with a number of different operators and Jena kept them in reserve long after most other cities had finished with them.

31 july 2004 - Halle, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Freiimfelder Strasse: A general works car of 1960, this Gotha car originated in Cottbus and spent time in the Halle operating fleet before being converted in 1993.

Tatra B4D #176

31 july 2004 - Halle, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Freiimfelder Strasse: As you would expect for a big tramway system the size of Halle, there is a vast fleet of trams, including these withdrawn Tatra cars in the yard of the main depot. Prominent is B4D #176, one of several which went for further service in Bulgaria.

Gotha T2 #6

31 july 2004 - Halle, Germany - Seebener Strasse: The former East German city of Halle has a fantastic tramway museum based on an old depot, which is connected to the city tracks to allow various trams to operate on a regular basis. Here is Kirnitzschtalbahn #6 just outside - a tram a bit like my girlfriend, as it has been about a bit. Built in 1938 for Erfurt, it worked on the Lockwitztalbahn in Dresden from 1968 until the line closed in 1977 and then passed to Bad Schandau, coming to Halle in 1993.

Lindner T27 #31

30 july 2004 - Halberstadt, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Friedhof: Perhaps the jewel in the crown of the Halberstadt tramways is this 1939 Lindner car, nicely restored for special services. I`m sorry, but I don`t know its earlier history - it may have always been here, or have come from another undertaking at some point in the past.

ME GT4ZR #113

30 july 2004 - Halberstadt, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Friedhof: The small depot is at the far end of Line 1, where the tramway is prevented by railway tracks from going any further. Several spare trams were to be found here when I visited, including this pair of ex-Freiburg GT4ZR cars. Only a handful of working trams is needed for normal services across the whole Halberstadt network, one of the lines only being operated on certain days. Nowadays, Leoliners built in Leipzig have taken over from the pretty little GT4s.

RAW TZ70/1 #29

ME GT4ZR #167

30 july 2004 - Halberstadt, Germany - Friedhof: At the terminus of Line 1 outside the depot, we see #167, a GT4 tram which originated in Frieburg, but also had a spell with the Nordhausen tramways before finishing its days here in Halberstadt. These little articulated trams seemed perfect for this attractive city with its narrow streets and historic architecture.

ME GT4 #159

30 july 2004 - Halberstadt, Germany - Bahnhof: The little tramway system at Halberstadt in Saxony was perhaps less well visited by enthusiasts as other cities in the former East Germany, but was entirely served in 2004 by two batches of GT4 trams, some ex-Freiburg and others ex-Stuttgart. Here is #159, formerly Stuttgart #564, at the main railway station, the terminus of all lines.

Kassel 0-4-0

27 july 2004 - Darmstadt, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Frankenstein: What a brilliant name for a tram depot! Lurking in the gloom at the back of the shed in 2004 was this tram locomotive, built by Henschel in 1919. It is probably operational by now.

Rathgeber ST6 Arbeitswagen #11

27 july 2004 - Darmstadt, Germany - betriebshof/zajezdnia Bollenfalltor: One of the 1955 HEAG Rathgeber-built trams not shown before on TWB is this general works car #11, converted from a passenger car.

Gastell ST3 #57

27 july 2004 - Darmstadt, Germany - betriebshof/zajezdnia Bollenfalltor: HEAG of Darmstadt has a fine collection of historic trams, including this fully restored 1912 Gastell motor car, shown here in the depot. They also have a rare operational steam tram, which sometimes comes out for special trips on the network, complete with several passenger trailers.

Duewag GT8NC-DU #1042

19 september 2013 - Germany, Mulheim - Konigstrasse: A Duisburg GT10 treads its way carefully across the complex trackwork at the point where the metre gauge trams of Mulheim leave the dual gauge lines through the city centre, used by the lengthy through, standard gauge route across the Ruhn region from Dusseldorf to Dortmund. There is also a metre gauge link to the Mulheim depot at this point, so the junction is extremely complicated.

Duewag T2 (Aufbauwg.)

19 september 2013 - Mulheim, Germany - Speldorf: This vehicle stands outside a house and garden store that has taken over the former tram depot at Speldorf on the interurban line between Duisburg and Mulheim. There is nothing visible on the outsde to give any clues about ownership or a fleet number, but my guess is that it was once from the local city system. It now serves as a striking advertisement for the shop, which still has some tracks in place and other evidence of its earlier use as a tramway depot.

MAN B72 #24

19 september 2013 - Wuppertal, Germany - Vohwinkel: Under the massive Schwebebahn structure at Kaiserplatz in Central Vohwinkel, car #24 is just leaving on a trip to Oberbarmen. Drivers of other vehicles are totally unaware of what is happening just above their heads, which is one of the major advantages of the Schwebebahn - nothing holds up the service.

MAN B72 #9

19 september 2013 - Wuppertal, Germany - Sonnborner Strasse: Car #9 of the Schwebebahn just hanging around over one of the main streets in the Wupper valley. These vehicles have now nearly all been replaced by a brand new design. Note the massive support beams and overhead tracks needed to carry the line above the other traffic.

MAN B72 #27

19 september 2013 - Wuppertal, Germany - Westende: One of the iconic Schwebebahn monorail cars on its journey to Vohwinkel, along its track spanning the River Wupper. When the line was proposed, this was the only place left in this narrow valley, already filled with railways, roads and industry, for the line to be built, so it was suspended over the water for most of the route. Wuppertal also had trams of two gauges and a funicular, but these have all gone now - you can still see trolleybuses at Vohwinkel, however.

Mercedes-Benz O530G #6848

20 september 2013 - Wuppertal, Germany - Kaiserstrasse Vohwinkel: Back in Wuppertal, we see one of the buses of the vast Rheinbahn system on Line 784, which runs for a short distance underneath the famous Schwebebahn suspended monorail.

Mitteldeutsche Stahlwerke ATw #610

21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajezdnia Stadtmitte: A very impressive works car of the Essen tramways, built in 1924 by the Mitteldeuscher Steelworks and obviously still useful. It is shown here complete with its matching match wagon #721. I wonder if they allow it into their extensive tram subways, however, as it looks far too big to operate there?

Bombardier M8D-NF #1507

21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: One of the first batch of Bombardier Flexity Classic trams in the depot yard. Most vehicles in public service on the system, which now includes the adjoining Mulheim tramways, are now of this type.

Duewag T4 #1501

21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: Yet another historic tram being restored by Essen Tramways is this 1951 grossraumwagen - soon, they will have nearly as many museum trams as the ones in normal passenger service! This one has a slight complication, as its fleet number was re-used for one of the new Bombardier cars, so there are now two #1501 in the fleet.

Uerdingen KSW #888

21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: This tram appeared at the Essen open day but has never been recorded on TWB until now - it was clearly numbered as #888 of the Essen system and looks very much like an Aufbauwagen of the late 1940s or early 1950s, but I could not find any data on it.

Duewag T4 #227

21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - Abzweig Katernberg: One of the visiting Duewag grossraumwagen providing free trips as far as this tight little turning loop at the city boundary on the interurban line to Gelsenkirchen, during the event staged to mark 120 years of tramway operation in Essen. Interesting trams, free rides, a beer tent and even half-dressed dancing girls - what was there not to like?

Duewag GT6ZR #88

21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: A visiting ex-BOGESTRA tram from the neighbouring Bochum system, now owned by the city`s historic transport group and offering free rides at the big Essen 120 year event. A 1969 Duewag GT6, nicely restored.

Westwaggon Lenkdreiachser #322

21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: Another Mulheim tram at the exhibition, ex-Oberhausen 227 - TWB says this was built in 1957, but the official record shows that it was built in 1954. Anyway, it was built by Westwaggon.

Uerdingen KSW #144

21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: Standing next to the Oberhausen Herbrand car was this 1921 tram which was another rescue. It was originally supplied to the Herten tramways, but eventually finished up in Essen and has now been restored in Essen livery, although I don`t think it ever worked here. TWB calls it a KSW car, but it certainly isn`t, although it may have been built by Uerdingen.

Herbrand 1899/1900 #25

21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: An amazing survivor from the very early days of tramways is this 1899 vehicle from Herbrand of Koln, once #25 in the original fleet of the Oberhausen tramways. In the 1990s this was a derelict heap of junk standing in the open air, but it was later rescued and fully restored as shown here.

Duewag T4 #640

21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: Another Deuwag at the big Essen show was this grossraumwagen of 1953, formerly #1535 in the operating fleet, but converted to a training tram in 1963 and now numbered 640.

Duewag T4ZR #620

21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Goldsmidtstrasse: For the 2013 open day, the neighbouring Bochum-Gelsenkirchen tramways sent this pretty little grossraumwagen of 1968, now retained as a driving school car. The BOGESTRA network is closely connected to Essen.

It is now in this rather startling all-over bright green livery.
