One of the last decisions of the Department for Transport before the election was the agreement to fund the extension of the Midland Metro from the current terminus at Snow Hill through the city centre to the main rail station at New Street. The project would also entail a complete change of rolling stock for bigger trams. And rightly so - apart from being a little tight, the quality of these vehicles leaves a bit to be desired. Unfortunately, the new government has already annouced cuts of £600m from the department's budget. Thus, knowing how much the Tories dislike trams, it is a good question whether this project will survive.
