16 may 2009 - Warszawa, Metro Marymont terminal. After World War II, Poland was suffering from lack of city buses. Star 52 buses manufactured in Sanok were too small, San H-01A - not reliable at all. Although there was a project of a citybus developed in Jelcz, in 1958 a license from Czechoslovakian Karosa was bought to solve the problem faster. A production on suburban model 043 began. Jelcz 272 MEX, coach converted to city service, followed in 1963. It was a front-engine vehicle with rear axle propelled. The vertical engine had a power of 160 HP. Whole chassis was manufactured in Czech Republic. Only body was built in Jelcz. This bus was built in huge numbers in 1960s and reliable enough to replace trolleybuses and tramways in years, when electric transport was not liked in socialistic Poland. The production continued to the end of 1970s. Leaf spring based suspension, not tight engine cover, front placed engine, high floor, only 2 doors were disadvantages of this model. However, its design was liked by many people in Poland and it's still remembered.
