There are of course short articulated cars as well (as you can see on rte 5 in the back), but these are one-man operated - given they have just two sets of doors. Payment as per usual in Japan - upon alighting, and as per usual one can pay in cash or the whole plethora of IC cards. There are also day tickets available, where the passenger scratches off the validity date and just shows it to the driver.
