Brill Saloon #10

21 march 2010 - Portugal, Ribeira de Sintra: Still poking around the Sintra Electrico depot, here is a photo of an enclosed Brill trailer that hasn`t featured before on TWB. Like all the other original trams on this system, it came from Philadelphia, USA in 1903. Trailers aren`t often used now on the Sintra-Atlantico line, because the condition of the track and the steep gradient make it rather a nightmare for modern Health and Safety officers.

Brill Crossbench #7

21 march 2010 - Portugal, Ribeira de Sintra: The Sintra tramway depot houses remarkable survivors. This line barely survived but, at the insistence of the local authority, was refurbished after several years of closure and now runs again from Sintra town down a steep and very tortuous track alongside the main road to the coast. Fortunately, the fleet of 1903-built, handbrake-only Brill trams has been kept intact and can still be ridden as they have been for over 100 years. Car #7, shown here, is a summer `toastrack` with open sides.

Bombardier Eurotram #MP 002

19 march 2010 - Porto, Aeroporto Francisco SA Carneiro: No expense was spared when the Porto Metro was built. Here at the city`s airport a very impressive overall roof covers the tracks and also Metro car 002, which hasn`t featured on TWB before. If there is any doubt where this picture was taken, just read the wall.

Bombardier Eurotram #MP 055

18 march 2010 - Porto, Ponte Luis: A Bombardier Eurotram crosses the amazing high bridge across the River Douro in central Porto. The modern Porto tram network was carved out from the remains of several narrow-gauge railway routes which once ran from the city centre to outlying suburbs, which were completely re-equipped with these futuristic-looking trams. Porto now has two completely separate tramways - old and new - although the Metro is more like a light railway.

Technical Equipment #Z-1

20 march 2010 - Lisboa, Santo Amaro: There appear to be only two or three works trams remaining from the batch of ten once supplied to Lisboa. Although I`m not an expert, they seem to have Brill 21E underframes and Dick, Kerr DB1 controllers, which suggests to me that they arrived here very early in the 1900s? Anyway, they are mostly replaced by motor trucks these days. This particular one is a box van and is still seen occasionally on the network at night.

Remodelado #564

20 march 2010 - Lisboa, Santo Amaro: Three contrasting trams inside the Carris depot. #564 is a `Remodelado` of 1931, rebuilt to handle modern traffic conditions in daily service. Car #Z-13 in the centre is a works car with open sides, called a `zorra` in Lisboa - there were once ten of these, supplied in the early 1900s for various technical duties, now mainly replaced by a fleet of motor trucks. This particular one was once car #395. The red car is Tourist Tram #3 - these provide a daily service round parts of the network at a premium fare, costing a lot more than the service trams that run the same routes. American tourists seem to like them, though. This particular car was once #726 and was built in 1938.

Brill Carris #283

20 march 2010 - Lisboa, Cais do Sodre: The impressive `toastrack` tram, now the last one remaining in Lisboa, on a rare trip outside its normal home in the Carris museum. These summer trams were built by Brill of Philadelphia, USA and shipped to Portugal in 1901. This tram had a very lucky escape - withdrawn from service in the early 1950s, it spent almost the next twenty years as a plaything in a city park until rescued for preservation in 1981. It is only used on sunny days (probably not because of the risk of rain damage, but because the drivers don`t like getting wet....)

14 march 2010 - Lisboa, Calcada de Sao Francisco: This is Lisboa tram #572 - honest! One of several places on the amazing Carris network where you wonder just how the tram stays on the track, particularly on this corner, where you can watch one wheel actually leave the rails as it turns. These rebuilt, traditional four-wheeled trams actually have very powerful motors and can sail up gradients such as this with ease.

Brill Carris #330

14 march 2010 - Lisboa, Santo Amaro: Brill convertible tram #330 of 1906 stands at the Carris depot before leaving on a tour of the Lisboa network. These bogie trams were once widespread in the city, having been bought direct from America in kit form and put together in these workshops. The side panels are designed to roll upwards into the roof, leaving the tram open in the summertime. Nowadays, this tram is a little fragile and can only use the flatter, straighter part of the network.

Miscellaneous 2-axle tram #173

22 march 2010 - Lisboa, Praca do Imperio, Belem: Standing off the track under the trees at the Belem Monastery loop in Lisboa is this, the very last `soapbox` four-wheeled trailer tram of the Carris system, now used as a rest home for tramway employees, who evidently use it for meal breaks and a nice sit down. Although there is a similar tram in the Carris museum, this one is the last to escape from captivity.

Tatra T2R #17

21 march 2013 - Liberec - tramway depot: This depot is an interesting place, as it houses trams on two gauges, including several historic trams, including this Tatra T2 that appears to have escaped notice before. I don`t know its detailed history, I`m afraid.

Tatra T2 #18

21 march 2013 - Liberec, Czech Republic: The one remaining metre-gauge tram line between Liberec and Jablonec is a favourite with enthusiasts as it is a largely single track interurban route through dense forest. It also uses Tatra T2 vehicles, which are the oldest on the network and have been quite extensively refurbished to keep the line going. For many years there has been a plan to close the line and divert traffic to a parallel railway route (and some dual-gauging has taken place quite recently), but the project appears to have stalled and you can still ride these nice trams for the foreseeable future.

Miscellaneous vehicles #260

23 april 2015 - Debrecen, tramway depot: Tucked away in one of the tramway sheds at the time of my visit was this Schlick Type L tram of 1913, which has an interesting past. It was originally #2944 and #2964 in the fleet of BKV Budapest and was then sold to a museum group in Amsterdam, Holland. In 2005 it was established that this group had no further use for it, so a group of local Hungarian enthusiasts were able to bring it back to Debrecen, when it has taken the number 260 and serves as a second museum tram.

FVV 2500 #1984

23 april 2015 - Debrecen, tramway depot: This permanenty-connected pair of Schlick Type F cars date back to 1904 and were in Budapest until 1984, when they were brought here for the tramway centenary and have remained ever since, being used to offer rides to visiting groups.

Ganz-Hunslet KCSV6-S1 #505

23 april 2015 - Debrecen, tramway depot: One of the 1997-built series production of Ganz-Hunslet articulated trams which run in Debrecen. I have noticed several small detail differences between the appearance of these and the 1993 prototype, #500. Both Ganz (once the most important Hungarian tramway builder) and Hunslet (who built, amongst other things, the subway cars for the City of Glasgow) have now closed down.

Ganz-Hunslet KCSV6-S1 #500

23 april 2015 - Debrecen, tramway depot: The city of Debrecen has largely copied Budapest by purchasing various home-grown Ganz trams over the years, including a small batch of the modern Ganz-Hunslet KCSV6 model which was offered from the early 1990s. The company soon went out of business, however, leaving these trams as unique as the very last Ganz trams to be built. It must be hoped that the city has a good spare parts contract, if it is to keep them in service for many more years. #500 shown here was the first to be supplied, followed by others a few years later.

Siemens foldalatti subway car #11

23 april 2015 - Budapest, Varosliget: Several people commented on the amazing Budapest `fodalatti` subway car of the pioneer line of 1896, so here is another photo. It looks rather like the insect called a preying mantis, doesn`t it? Note the huge iron chassis bars, just like railway wagons built to carry huge loads in the centre of the vehicle, and the primitive Siemens bow current collector. Inside, it is built almost entirely of varnished wood.

Miscellaneous 2-axle tram #2

19 april 2015 - Budapest, Varosmajor: Although purists might argue that this has no place on TWB, the Budapest Cogwheel Railway is Line #60 of the tramway company and shares drivers with the other, more conventional routes in the city. It runs for about 3 miles into the hills of Buda along a track too steep for normal trams and has been in existence since 1874, when the vehicle pictured here was built by the Nikolaus Riggenbach company who first equipped the line. I think it might be the oldest vehicle ever seen on TWB? The brake-man does not have a very pleasant job. Note also the traverser, still in use here to join several tracks.

BHÉV MIV #40

22 april 2015 - Miskolc, tramway depot: Unlikely to run again, but with an interesting history, is the 5-window tram built circa 1910 for passenger service on the HEV interurban lines which still run to several parts of the city of Budapest. These distinctive green trains used to reach further into the city along street tracks, hence the need for conventional tramcars. The tram shown here later came to Miskolc and ran in normal service for many years with the fleet number 78, eventually becoming a works car #M40.

Siemens foldalatti subway car #11

24 april 2015 - Varosliget, Pest, Hungary: When Budapest opened its first subway line in 1897, it was only the third underground electric railway in the world. This is one of the original Siemens & Halske cars built for the opening - as you can see, it will never win any prizes for good looks! However, the line was a great success and these cars ran for many years. Even now, Line 1 needs special vehicles built to the very restricted size of tunnels. These companies were closed down by new laws in 1934 and this bus disappeared, only to be found derelict on a farm in Norfolk in 1984, rescued and fully restored. It always amuses me to see an historic vehicle broken down - a large crowd of people instantly forms and just gets in the way, none of whom have the faintest idea what the problem is, but all with an opinion.

Bombardier M5000 #3039

10 april 2014 - Union Street, Oldham, UK: Oldham is a large town part way between Manchester and Rochdale, served since 2013 by the fast-expanding Manchester Metrolink tramway system. The trams took over a heavy rail line which passed round Oldham but didn`t really serve the centre of town, so the tramway leaves the old railway alignment and passes directly along some of the principal streets, as seen here.

10 april 2014 - Abraham Moss, Manchester, UK: The last few weeks of Ansaldo T68 operation on Manchester Metrolink saw #2003 here on a Bury service. As the system greatly expanded in 2014 with new lines to Rochdale and the airport, Transport for Greater Manchester decided to replace all these 1999 trams with Bombardier cars, even though they were still in extremely good condition and (in tramway terms) only just middle-aged (indeed, I clearly remember my first visit to see them, just a few weeks after the system first opened). I`m not sure if a buyer was ever found for them, as the high floor layout means only a limited second-hand market.
