AEC Regent III/Weymann #3

3 may 2009 - Redhill (UK) – Brighton Road. A very smart AEC Regent of Reading Corporation Transport (which has now become Reading Transport).

Leyland Leopard PSU3/3/R / Harrington Grenadier #CDK 448 C

3 may 2009 - Redhill (UK) – Brighton Road. The heavyweight Leyland coach chassis of the mid-1960s was the Leopard – here with a Harrington Grenadier body.

Leyland Tiger Cub PSUC1/2 /Burlingham Seagull #PUJ 781

3 may 2009 - Redhill (UK) – Brighton Road. The Leyland Tiger Cub was a popular lightweight coach of the 1950s. This one has distinctive Burlingham Seagull bodywork.

Guy Arab II/Park Royal #G351

3 may 2009 - Redhill (UK) – Brighton Road. Today is the traditional London to Brighton rally of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society and several interesting buses always take part and they pass the end of my street. Here is the wartime Guy Arab bus from London, with ‘utility’ bodywork made largely from wood and fabric, as steel was not obtainable. London Transport would not have bought Guy buses through choice, either, but had to take anything that was available.

Bristol Lodekka FS #YDL 315

4 may 2008 - Redhill, Surrey (GB) – The Cutting. Taking part in the 2008 Historic Commercial Vehicles London – Brighton rally, this Bristol was previously owned by the Isle of Wight bus operator. The Lodekka was an important bus, being the first low-height, double deck design for the UK market and was popular in the 1960s. Not all operators were allowed to buy it, though, so Dennis built the very similar Loline bus for them under licence.

Ford Transit VI / Chassis Developments #LK06CZT

27 january 2009 - Redhill, Surrey, UK – Station Road East. Even though the district where I live is only 30km from central London, rural buses are essential. The local council operates these ‘Buses4U’, a demand-responsive service that will collect and deliver you from home at any reasonable time. The buses have a wheelchair lift and are very popular with old people – just a phone call makes a booking and the bus will take you to the town centre.

Leyland Titan TD1/Park Royal #248

3 may 1992 - Redhill, Surrey, UK - Brighton Road. Amberley Chalk Pits museum in Sussex operates a nice selection of vintage buses, including this 1939 Leyland. Southdown was a major bus and coach operator along the south coast of England and their vehicles were always immaculate in their striking green and cream livery.

AEC Regent III RT #RT4317

4 may 1999 - Redhill, Surrey, UK - Brighton Road. A typical London RT bus on its way to Brighton. This isn`t even an official entry in the rally, but is just along for the ride. Like Routemasters, a great many of these buses are preserved.

Leyland Titan PD1/Leyland #19

4 may 1999 - Redhill, Surrey, UK - Brighton Road. I'm very fortunate that the best UK historic bus rally runs near my house. Here is a nice all-Leyland PD1 double decker that was new to Lytham St Annes Corporation (the next town to Blackpool) and which ran there until 1972.

Guy Vixen Special GS #GS76

4 may 2008 - Redhill, Surrey, UK – Brighton Road. These lovely little Guy buses were specially built for London Transport in the 1950s to operate country routes. Although they seated only 26 passengers and were worked by one person, they had many features in common with bigger London buses like the RT and RF classes. They lasted with London Transport until 1972 and many were sold for further service with other rural operators.

Leyland Lioness #DM 6228

4 may 2008 - Redhill, Surrey, UK – Brighton Road. One of the entrants in this year’s London to Brighton historic commercial vehicle run was this impressive 1929 charabanc (a convertible bus). The canvas roof can be removed for sunny days – so this doesn’t happen very often in English weather. This type of vehicle was commonly used for trips to the seaside in the 1920’s and 1930s.

LDV Convoy #3753007

18 august 2008 - Redhill, Surrey, UK – Redstone Manor. That’s my house in the background. Post Buses normally run in remote country areas, like parts of Scotland and Wales, but here we are less than 30km from Central London. This bus runs to the village of Outwood in Surrey – travelling is slow, though, because of all the stops the postman must make along the route.

LDV Convoy #3753007

18 august 2008 - Redhill, Surrey, UK – Redstone Manor. A Post Bus outside my house. Royal Mail Post Buses run in some parts of UK without conventional bus services. The idea is simple – the postman will pick up and drop off passengers anywhere along a fixed route as he delivers and collects letters. He has to go there anyway, so it costs little more to operate his van as a bus. A Phototrans debut.

MAN 14.220 / MCV Evolution #AE06 XRM

4 june 2008 - Redhill, Surrey - bus station/dworzec autobusowy. Another debut for TWB. The owning company, Flights Hallmark, runs a large fleet of airport buses and coaches as well as some grant-supported bus services under the name Surrey Connect. Flights Hallmark recently sold its bus operations to Tellings Golden Miller, which was then bought by Arriva – so this is really an Arriva bus! Complicated, isn’t it? A sad reflection of the huge mess that deregulation of British bus services has caused.

Dennis Dart SLF / Caetano Nimbus #376

4 june 2008 - Redhill, Surrey, G.B. The brand new bus station on opening day, with a Metrobus Dennis Dart waiting to leave on local Line 430 – a route that has hardly changed in at least 75 years. Metrobus (part of the Go-Ahead bus group) is now the major operator in the Redhill district and operates a large fleet of similar vehicles. Buses from at least five other operators also call at the new station.

Scania CN230UB 4x2 EB #626

4 june 2008 - Redhill, Surrey, G.B. A new bus, a new bus station and a new bus line. Metrobus ‘Fastway’ Line 100 has been extended to link Crawley and Gatwick Airport with the new Redhill bus station which opened for the first time on Wednesday 4 June. A fleet of new Scania low floor buses in special Fastway colours operates the route. In Crawley, similar buses run on concrete guideways, although this is the non-guided version. #626 loads at Redhill with #627 just arriving behind.
