7 july 2010 - Gandawa (BE), Lange Steenstraat. Plastikowe zaplecze socjalne świadczy o tym, że widzimy tu końcówkę linii 4. To tymczasowe rozwiązanie, wprowadzone na czas remontów w centrum starówki. Linię 4 przepołowiono, aczkolwiek na obu odcinkach pozostawiono zwykły numer, bez żadnych wymysłów typu 74 czy Z-4.

7 july 2010 - Gandawa (BE), Kouter. W latach 1998 - 2003 zmodernizowano pierwsze 22 parówy (#6202-23) z początku lat 70. Ich służba na gandawskich ulicach powinna trwać jeszcze przynajmniej przez kilka lat. Z pozostałych 30 wagonów PCC (#6224-54) zdecydowana większość została wycofana z ruchu.

16 may 2010 - Gandawa. Plac postojowy zajezdni Gentbrugge(?) zlokalizowano w dość osobliwy sposób - pod estakadą autostrady. Dzięki temu pojazdy nie mokną w deszczu, jednocześnie nie ma wymogu utrzymywania dedykowanego zadaszenia. Czy zajezdnia powstała na niezagospodarowanej przestrzeni pod autostradą, czy też estakadę wybudowano specjalnie z myślą o miejskich autobusach - nie wiem.

Przystanek zlokalizowany - podobnie jak ostatnie setki metrów trasy linii 22 - pod estakadą autostrady znajduje się z dala od zabudowań oraz innych potencjalnych źródeł i celów podróży, z wyjątkiem pobliskiej zajezdni autobusowej. Z uwagi na ten fakt tramwaje po zmianie kierunku jazdy natychmiast odjeżdżają z przystanku końcowego, postój zaś odbywają dwa przystanki dalej - przy głównej bramie rzeczonej zajezdni.

16 may 2010 - Gent, Papegaaistraat. W niedzielę nie udało się spotkać na mieście żadnego wagonu PCC. Z jednej strony szkoda, ale z drugiej to może nawet dobrze. Przynajmniej nie musiałem słuchać strzelania styczników liniowych.

16 may 2010 - Gent, Brusselsesteenweg. Wagon HermeLijn u kresu swojej całkiem niekrótkiej trasy. Linia 21/22 jako jedyna kursuje obecnie po całej długości swojej trasy. Ze względu na przebudowy torowisk w centrum miasta pozostałe 2 linie (1 i 4) podzielone są na 2 części.

16 may 2010 - Gent, Poperingestraat. Na osiedlowych uliczkach gdzie całkowite wydzielenie torowiska było niemożliwe wprowadzono dla samochodów jeden kierunek ruchu - "od centrum" - tak by tramwaje śpieszące do centrum nie napotkały przez przypadek na jakąś kongestię ruchu.

16 may 2010 - Gent, Hoogstraat. Rok temu w Gandawie doszło do cięć elektrotransportu. Na linii numer 3 zamiast trolejbusów pojawiły się autobusy, które kursują pod zwisającą jeszcze gdzieniegdzie siecią trakcyjną.

17 may 2010 - Gandawa, Limburgstraat. Z uwagi na remont Korenmarkt linia 4 (podobnie jak 1) została podzielona na dwie części. Jedna z nich kończy trasę pod Katedrą Św. Bawona. Z uwagi natomiast na siąpiący deszcz foto technicznie poległo.

Now the Gent trolleybus system has closed, it has nowhere to run and must just sit in the Woluwe museum once more, its last day of fame just a memory. Look at the beer barrel pub - funny!

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – depot/zajezdnia Gentbrugge. Hands up, all those who think this is a trolleybus? I think you would lose the bet. In fact, this was never a trolleybus - it’s the Gent wire-greasing vehicle whish ran at night to lubricate the overhead wires. It began life in 1973 as bus #06 with the Gent operator MIVG and was taken over by deLijn as their bus #8500. In 1989 the trolley poles were added to make this diesel-powered works vehicle.

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – depot/zajezdnia Gentbrugge. Trolleybuses 01, 03, 05 and 06 lined up in the tram depot yard. They won’t run again unless someone buys them for further service in another country. This vehicle type might now be extinct, too, as I think these were the only ones ever built. All very sad.

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – Dampoort. Only one of the platforms of the bus station at Dampoort was wired for trolleybus operation, and here the driver replaces his poles for the last time. The watching girl will never see this again! The guides on the wires here make this a simple operation – much simpler than on plain lines. Note the trolley retrievers to hold the ropes down – we never had these in UK.

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – PTT Mariakerke. The northern terminus of the Gent trolleybus line involved an awkward turn into a busy main road, but this didn’t seem to cause great problems. Bus 11 has just turned to return to the city. There was only ever one trolleybus line, numbered Line 3 – Lines 1 and 2 have always been trams. There is a plan to return Line 3 to tramway operation, but this must be a long way off.

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – Meersemdries. At the southern terminus of the only trolleybus line, in a quiet side road. Line 3 was mostly a back-street operation and the trolleybuses only reached the centre of the city quite briefly, as if they were apologising for being there. I think de Lijn weren’t very keen to have them, either - for long periods, the trolleybus line was operated only by diesel buses, and the few trolleybuses that ran used their auxiliary diesel engines with the poles down. Now, of course, it’s only diesel buses – hardly a good advertisement for clean, sustainable electric power.

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – zajezdnia/depot Gentbrugge. This odd little battery-powered works car is one of two constructed here from the remains of ex-Bochum Deuwag car #11 of 1961. They call them Lucien-1 and Lucien-2 and they are used to move bogies around in the workshops. Behind is the body of Vicinal SO Type car 9014 of 1956, a Coast line tram which is being made ready for their big 2010 centenary.

When I first came to Gent ten years ago, I was surprised to see that their PCC cars had no partition between the passengers and driver (who issues tickets and takes cash). In 2009, I’m really amazed that the unrefurbished cars are still like this – Gent must be a very low-crime city.

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) - Burgstraat. The first PCC delivered to Gent in 1971 (#6201) has been nicely restored to the original blue and cream livery of the former Gent tramway company (MIVG) and renumbered back to #01. A very pretty tram.

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – Flanders Expo. The Gent tramway network is still growing – this is the latest extension to an exhibition site and park-and-ride facility. New trams are also arriving, which will eventually mean the withdrawal of the lovely PCCs. The new trams are the standard de Lijn Hermelijn Bombardier cars – efficient, but not very exciting.

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – Zwijnaardebrug. One of the many PCCs which has been modernised with separate driving cabs and air conditioning – this is the reason for the ugly scoops on the roof, which rather spoils the appearance.

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – zajezdnia/depot Gentbrugge. A classic metre-gauge Belgian PCC. The 55 Gent series PCCs are all double-ended and were delivered in two batches between 1971 and 1974. Many have been refurbished, but these original cars still carry their old Gent number (#31) alongside the de Lijn 62xx number. At 35 years old, they are still as good as new!

12 may 2009 - Gent (BE) – Gentbrugge. The star of the show for the closing parade was the historic Bruxelles trolleybus from the Woluwe museum, which was brought here specially for the weekend. Here, it arrives back at the depot entrance after a test run. Just behind, a line of withdrawn trolleys wait for the scrap man.

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) - Gent (BE) – Sint-Michielshelling. Crossing the city centre for almost the last time. A few other Belgian cities had trolleybuses, but Gent has been the last system for many years. At the end, this was one of only three Gent trolleybuses that could be operated.

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – Sint-Michielshelling. The centre of Gent has very nice buildings, but often too many people! I managed to take this photo, though. The trolleybuses have diesel engines for operating away from the wires (very slow and noisy) and would probably be OK for a few more years, but de Lijn has decided to replace them with normal buses, and maybe one day with another tram line – the trolleybus route was once a tram line, which the trolleys replaced.

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – Gentbrugge Meersemdries. Dzien dobry! I made a little European trip, so was quiet for a while. Now, I hope to bring you new photos. The trolleybus system in Gent closed down this weekend, and this is one of the final trips on the line. Now, all trolleybuses are gone in Belgium. Here is the terminus at one end of the 8km line, which opened in 1985.

De Lijn już jest w trakcie zamiany linii na tabor AG300 CNG i około połowy brygad w tej chwili to dieslowskie AG300. Z jednej strony szkoda, z drugiej strony – jaki sens ekonomiczny ma JEDNA linia trolejbusowa?
