A number of these Russian KTM-5 Type trams are on the property, and used alongside the RVZ-6 and Tatra cars – they seem to turn up anywhere on the system, but can only run as single cars as they have no multiple-unit equipment. Note the unusual sliding doors.

31 may 2006 - Daugavpils (LV) – 18 Novembra iela. The driving cab of an RVZ-6 tram – very basic controls, and all instructions in Cyrillic. Quite nice to drive, but you must remember, when reaching a junction in the overhead wires, that the trolley pole is on the second tram of a two-car set, so a very long way back from where you are driving.

31 may 2006 - Daugavpils (LV) – Daugavas iela. The newest tram in Daugavpils is this solitary Type KTM-8K. I assume more of these would have been delivered here after 1994, if Latvia had not broken away from Russia. Anyway, now they prefer second-hand Tatras, it seems. So it remains unique. Note the trolley rope hanging down loosely at the side – a typical arrangement.

31 may 2006 - Daugavpils (LV) – depot/zajezdnia. Another huge works tram – this time, a steeple cab locomotive. It’s hard to see what use they have here for such a machine, but it’s kept in good condition. It looks as though it would be more at home on an industrial railway somewhere – perhaps that’s where it came from.

31 may 2006 - Daugavpils – Ventspils iela. Two of the ex-Schwerin Tatra T3 cars which have replaced some of the Latvian-built trams. Most of the track in Daugavpils is on side-of-the-street reservation, although some of the roads along which it runs don’t have any hard surface.

The nearest thing you will find to an authentic Russian tramway in Western Europe is in Daugavpils, a largely Russian-speaking industrial city near the Belarus border. The system has a rather ‘primitive feel and some of the trams are Russian-built. These RVZ-6 cars were constructed in Riga, though, and this is now the only place you can still see them working, I think. They run on Russian broad gauge track, of course.
