Crossley TDD42 Empire #80

6 august 2012 - Manchester (UK) – Museum of Transport. Ashton Corporation was one of seven trolleybus operators which used the wires in and around the city, as trams had done before them. This part-restored bus is a Crossley Empire, a rare survivor. The museum also has a three-axle Crossley Dominion, in a rather better state of preservation. Ashton was one of the last Manchester trolleybus operators, not closing down until 1966.

Leyland Leyland Royal Tiger PSU1/Northern Counties #25

6 august 2012 - Manchester (UK) – Museum of Transport. A nice Leyland Royal Tiger of 1953, one of the first underfloor engined buses operated by Manchester Corporation – this one has an unusual centre entrance.

Leyland Tiger TS2/Manchester Corporation #28

6 august 2012 - Manchester (UK) – Museum of Transport. This lovely old bus from 1930 was successfully operated to attack various ‘pirate’ operators, who had put numerous buses onto the roads to try and steal business from the Corporation. Ironically, this is much like the situation in Manchester today, where deregulation of services had led to a swarm of new operators working the city’s roads in competition with Greater Manchester buses.

Crossley DD42/7 #321

6 august 2012 - Manchester (UK) – Museum of Transport. Another Crossley bus, but this time with an improved engine, developed as the result of a major programme of improvement to try and recover Crossley’s reputation in the market. This was too little, too late, however, and no more buses were built by them after 1952.

Crossley DD42/8 #2150

6 august 2012 - Manchester (UK) – Museum of Transport. Crossley was a major bus manufacturer until 1952, when the company was bought by AEC and eventually closed down. Their buses had many good features, but were let down by a poor engine and their reputation suffered as a result. Manchester Corporation bought many Crossley buses, as they were the local manufacturer. This particular example was a tram replacement bus bought in 1949, just when the last Manchester tramways were closing.

Atkinson PD746 / Northern Counties #70

6 august 2012 - Manchester (UK) – Museum of Transport. This is something you won’t see every day – a bus from the Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley and Dukinfield Joint Transport Board – a collection of towns near Manchester who joined together to run trams (and later buses) in an area to the east of the city. They must have used very long vehicles, just to fit the name on the side! This bus is unique for another reason, as it was the only Atkinson double-deck bus ever built.

Foden PVSC6 / Lawson #LMA 284

6 august 2012 - Manchester (UK) – Museum of Transport. Foden of Sandbach, Cheshire are still producing trucks today. What isn’t so well known is that they made high quality (but expensive) buses and coaches in the 1940s and 1950s. This coach carries the last remaining body by Lawson of Stoke on Trent, who closed down not long after it was built in 1949. The Bullock company still operates today.

Leyland Titan PD2/Burlingham #3520

6 august 2012 - Manchester (UK) – Museum of Transport. A look around this well-established museum in central Manchester, which holds a very large selection of historic buses and other period vehicles with links to the Manchester area. In this general view of one of the exhibition halls, prominent is a red Manchester Corporation Leyland Titan of 1958 with an unusual Burlingham body.

Brush Railcoach #623

29 july 2012 - Manchester (UK) – Heaton Park. The tramway modernisation at Blackpool has meant that several working trams are no longer required there and have been offered to museums. Heaton Park now has several, including this 1930s Brush ‘Railcoach’ which was quickly put into service. Behind the tram is the boating lake, where a brand new depot is being built later this year to replace the current cramped facilities.

Milnes Open-Top #5

29 july 2012 - Manchester (UK) – Heaton Park. Stockport tram #5 heads along a park road towards the boating lake. Stockport once had several tram lines, some of which connected to the large Manchester system, but all were gone by the 1950s. This tram survived and spent several years running as a ‘guest’ in Blackpool before coming to Heaton Park. The Heaton Park line runs for about one mile along various roads, from one of the main gates towards the centre of the park.

Milnes Open-Top #5

29 july 2012 - Manchester (UK) – Heaton Park. Just a short distance from the modern Metrolink line to Bury is this museum tramway with an interesting history. When the original Manchester trams closed in 1949, a long section of double track which extended into the park was covered over and largely forgotten. Now some enthusiasts have uncovered the old tracks, extended the line further into the park and rebuilt a number of trams which run at weekends. This is Stockport 5, a 1901 Dick, Kerr open-top car built for the opening of the Stockport system.

Bombardier M5000 #3022

6 august 2012 - Manchester (UK) – Central Park. One of the new stops on the Rochdale extension of Metrolink. I have no idea why this huge and extravagant ‘roof’ has been built at this stop, except perhaps as an architectural statement. Actually, there doesn’t appear to be a Central Park here, either ..... By the way – all the original 1990s T68 Class trams built for the original Metrolink system are now being scrapped to make way for the new cars – be quick if you want to buy them!
