21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: Standing next to the Oberhausen Herbrand car was this 1921 tram which was another rescue. It was originally supplied to the Herten tramways, but eventually finished up in Essen and has now been restored in Essen livery, although I don`t think it ever worked here. TWB calls it a KSW car, but it certainly isn`t, although it may have been built by Uerdingen.
21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: An amazing survivor from the very early days of tramways is this 1899 vehicle from Herbrand of Koln, once #25 in the original fleet of the Oberhausen tramways. In the 1990s this was a derelict heap of junk standing in the open air, but it was later rescued and fully restored as shown here.
21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: Another Deuwag at the big Essen show was this grossraumwagen of 1953, formerly #1535 in the operating fleet, but converted to a training tram in 1963 and now numbered 640.
21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Goldsmidtstrasse: For the 2013 open day, the neighbouring Bochum-Gelsenkirchen tramways sent this pretty little grossraumwagen of 1968, now retained as a driving school car. The BOGESTRA network is closely connected to Essen.
21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Goldsmidtstrasse: One of the 1979 batch of Duewag 8-axle trams, #1115, was converted in 2010 to this works car by the simple expedient of removing a section, making it now a GT6. It is now in this rather startling all-over bright green livery.
21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Goldsmidtstrasse: One of several visiting trams at the 120 year Essen celebrations was this Mulheim Duewag GT6 of 1958, already retained as a museum tram by 2013. The city of Mulheim is connected by tram to Essen and is now part of an area-wide shared organisation called Ruhrbahn.
21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Goldsmidtstrasse: The operating fleet of Essenerr Verkehrs was being replaced with these Bombardier Flexity Classic low-floow trams when I took this photograph at their 2013 open day, staged to celebrate 120 years of operation.
21 september 2014 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajezdnia: I wondered if this picture would get your attention! This was the rollout of the very newest Bombardier Flexity Outlook #1607 at the city tram depot, an occasion celebrated by speeches and this performance by a troupe of exotic dancers wearing very little apart from a few feathers. Sadly, they got in the way of a clear picture of the tram....
21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia: One of the Essen works cars or arbeitswagen is this late 1940s Aufbauwagen which has carried a number of different fleet numbers and is now #615.
20 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajezdnia: For the celebration of 120 years of Essen tramways, an impressive collection of trams from the city and surrounding area was assembled in the main depot, including this Duewag GT8 #1753, which was still in normal passenger service at the time. Like all the other vehicles displayed, it was kept in spotless condition.
21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - Goldschmidtstrasse: What a lovely thing! The 1996 Mercedes-Benz 0317 one-and-a-half deck bus #3902 which has been preserved by Essener Verkehrs, making a special appearance during an open day at the city`s tram depot. This unusual style of bus was quite fashionable in Germany during the 1990s.
21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia: At the Essen city tram depot, a very smart 1952 Scholing track car which has had several owners in its relatively short life. Built for the Solingen tramways, in whose livery it is shown here, it passed to the Vestische Strassenbahnen in 1959 and was then transferred to Essen, who eventually passed it to the Bergische tram Museum where it now resides. It was brought specially back to Essen for a depot open day in 2013.
