20 february 2010 - Alexandria, Mustafa Kamel depot. And back to looking at Alexandria depots - now we're in the Ramleh lines depot. Because Egypt is a rather warm country, the depots are rather dark on the inside - thanks to which there are dramatic light conditions inside.

20 february 2010 - Alexandria, Karmuz depot. Since the president of Egypt decided to disallow the import of used tram cars, Alexandria has a bit of a problem. On one hand there is neither any money to buy new low-floor trams nor to modernise the tracks accordingly; on the other hand they can't buy used trams which would be appropriate for this network. The only solution - until Khosny Mubarak either changes his mind or kicks the bucket - is to modernise existing vehicles. You are therefore looking at the skelet of a Duewag built locally.

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Karmuz depot. Alexandria has two tram networks. One of them, called Ramleh lines, is basically one line that runs along the coast. The other (Medina) is the rest of the city tram network. On the Ramleh lines trams use normal pantographs, on the Medina line they still have trolley poles. Two routes (25 and 36) run on both networks - for these APTA rebuilt some Kinki Sharyo cars by adding pantographs.

19 february 2010 - Aleksandria, zajezdnia Karmuz. A tak wygląda pulpit tramwaju Kinki Sharyo – wagony z Kairu wyglądają podobnie. Po lewej strony nastawnik (korbę zdjęto), po prawej hamulec na sprężone powietrze (również bez korbki). Cztery guziki na dole to otwieranie i zamykanie drzwi po obu stronach, a poniżej (poza kadrem) mamy pedał czuwaka i dzwonka. Proste, prawda?

Sytuacja 'diuwagow' w Osijeku nie wyglada jednak tak zle, jakby wynikalo z tego zdjecia - ostatnio zakupiono kilka wagonow z Zagrzebia, dzieki czemu mozliwe bylo zwiekszenie uruchomienia po otwarciu nowej linii.

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Karmuz terminus. And so we made it to the tram loop, next door to one of the three tram depots in Alexandria. The attitude of the staff towards us couldn't be more different than in Cairo - seeing the Danish guys they immediately bade us welcome, invited us for tea, and showed us around the whole depot. Oh, and all they wanted in return were keyrings from Skjoldenaesholm. If you would thus like to walk around the tram depots in Alexandria, I suggest investing a bit of money in producing keyrings with Duewags - satisfaction is guaranteed :)

18 february 2010 - Cairo, outside Port Said depot. Cars 6068+6067 have just traversed the 2km-long service track between El Matariya and the depot, and are now at the depot gates. As a CTA worker met outside the depot said, the great Port Said depot (see satellite picture) only runs around 17 trams a day - which works out to 1-2 per route. And - sadly - the cars do tend appear at the stops in rather irregular intervals. Also, despite there being quite a few passengers riding in them, buses running on parallel routes appear far more crowded.

18 february 2010 - Cairo, Port Said depot. As I had mentioned previously, Cairo still has two functioning tram depots. The Heliopolis depot runs the Heliopolis Metro lines, whereas the Port Said depot runs the remainder of the Heliopolis routes. Sadly, after long negotiations, we were refused entry to the depot. However - as in Helwan - the first available tramcar was rolled out for us.

17 february 2010 - Helwan, tram depot. The driver organised an impromptu parade in front of the tram depot, which was such a state secret that we weren't allowed to enter.... Sadly, in order to get the vehicles side by side, car 6103 had to use the crossover outside the gate. I can't honestly remember whether the catenary above the crossover was sagging badly or whether it was there at all, but you can see the result of that manoeuvre. After the old banger in the EMPC film studios, this was the second car in Egypt to be broken in our honour...

He disappeared inside the shed and brought out another train for us, including the crew (a conductor in each car). But he didn't stop there...

17 february 2010 - Helwan, tram depot. Despite the fact, that the system is in a terrible state, the security of the depot is compromised by two groups - scrap metal hunters and tram fans from Europe... After walking 3km to the tram depot, some guy appeared out of nowhere. He spoke decent English and we asked him whether he could get us past the guys at the gate. Sadly - that didn't work. Instead, we got to know a very nice tram driver, who led us to a local shop where we could buy water. While other group members were giving away free English lessons, I strayed aside and took this shot through the fence. Next to the scrapyard pictured, there was a few tens of trams standing in the shed. Generally speaking, there were enough trams in the depots to guarantee a 7.5 minute frequency on both routes. Sadly - the number of cars working on this day was around 5 or so, and the running frequency was determined by the mood of the depot crew.
