21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajezdnia Stadtmitte: A very impressive works car of the Essen tramways, built in 1924 by the Mitteldeuscher Steelworks and obviously still useful. It is shown here complete with its matching match wagon #721. I wonder if they allow it into their extensive tram subways, however, as it looks far too big to operate there?
21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: One of the first batch of Bombardier Flexity Classic trams in the depot yard. Most vehicles in public service on the system, which now includes the adjoining Mulheim tramways, are now of this type.
21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: Yet another historic tram being restored by Essen Tramways is this 1951 grossraumwagen - soon, they will have nearly as many museum trams as the ones in normal passenger service! This one has a slight complication, as its fleet number was re-used for one of the new Bombardier cars, so there are now two #1501 in the fleet.
21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: This tram appeared at the Essen open day but has never been recorded on TWB until now - it was clearly numbered as #888 of the Essen system and looks very much like an Aufbauwagen of the late 1940s or early 1950s, but I could not find any data on it.
21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - Abzweig Katernberg: One of the visiting Duewag grossraumwagen providing free trips as far as this tight little turning loop at the city boundary on the interurban line to Gelsenkirchen, during the event staged to mark 120 years of tramway operation in Essen. Interesting trams, free rides, a beer tent and even half-dressed dancing girls - what was there not to like?
21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: A visiting ex-BOGESTRA tram from the neighbouring Bochum system, now owned by the city`s historic transport group and offering free rides at the big Essen 120 year event. A 1969 Duewag GT6, nicely restored.
21 september 2013 - Essen, Germany - betriebshof/zajedznia Stadtmitte: Another Mulheim tram at the exhibition, ex-Oberhausen 227 - TWB says this was built in 1957, but the official record shows that it was built in 1954. Anyway, it was built by Westwaggon.
