13 june 2009 - Paris, Place de la Bastille. Jak się okazało, Francja to jednak dziki kraj. Nikt tu nie gada po angielsku, a w każdym razie ja w ciągu 8 dni pobytu takiej osoby nie spotkałem (nie licząc oczywiście licznej rzeszy turystów brytoli i amerykańców). Brak jakichkolwiek chęci do nawiązania jakiegokolwiek dialogu z przyjezdnym w skrajnych przypadkach objawia się nawet udawaniem, że nie rozumieją uniwersalnego języka, czyli... migowego ;) Sami Francuzi sprawiają zresztą wrażenie zagubionych we własnym kraju. Podsumowując, stężenie niezbyt rozgarniętych bufonów mających niezwykle wysokie mniemanie o sobie jest tu z pewnością największe na świecie.

14 june 2009 - Lille (FR) – Marquette. Tramway Touristique de la Vallee de la Deule. Car 307 ready to leave the AMITRAM depot for a trip along the line. It’s hard to believe that this tiny tram ran on the same Mongy line as the articulated Breda monsters of today! On Sunday afternoons, two trams provide a 30-minute service. Although it is publicised as a local tourist attraction, the tramway is primarily a place where the museum group can run its restored trams.

14 june 2009 - Lille (FR) – Wambrechies. Tramway Touristique de la Vallee de la Deule. The big ELRT interurban passes a row of attractive cottages along the banks of the canal. These trams were displaced by second-hand German cars in the 1980s and can no longer run on the Mongy, where the voltage has been raised from 600v to 750v.

The other operating car on the day of my visit was this Lille-Roubaix car of 1906, pictured from a road bridge that crosses the canal. Although this is a working waterway, the canal path is popular with local walkers and cyclists.

14 june 2009 - Lille (FR) – Wambrechies. Tramway Touristique de la Vallee de la Deule. A closer look at the big ELRT interurban car. The museum group who operate this line (AMITRAM) has a number of Lille cars in store, as well as various trams from other cities. Hopefully, some of them will eventually run here when they have been restored. The group has just announced that they are disposing of some non-Lille trams and buses, so look at their web site if you would like one!

14 june 2009 - Lille (FR) – Wambrechies. Tramway Touristique de la Vallee de la Deule. The first TWB pictures of this working electric tramway museum on the edge of Lille. A metre gauge line has been built alongside a canal for about 3km, on which various trams run on Sundays and holidays. Some trams have been restored and others wait in store, together with a number of historic buses. This is a tram from the Lille-Roubaix-Tourcoing interurban line, waiting at Wambrechies village as a London-Paris Eurostar train crosses above.

15 june 2009 - Lille (FR) - Marcq-en-Baroeul. For the 1994 modernisation, Transpole built a new depot, but the old depot nearby remains abandoned. They also raised the line voltage from 600 volts to 750 volts. Here in the old depot is an example of what was lost when the Breda cars arrived – a 400 series bogie tram from 1911. It’s covered in pigeon shit and feathers, but is still a lovely tram. This ran in service until the 1950s, but can’t run now – there are no connecting tracks and the voltage is too high. I think it last ran for the 70th anniversary in 1979 – but won’t run for the centenary this year - very sad.

15 june 2009 - Tourcoing (FR) – Pont Hydraulique. Two Breda trams pass alongside the canal in Tourcoing. The service on each of the two lines is about every ten minutes, giving a five minute headway on the common section into Lille.

15 june 2009 - Tourcoing (FR) – Rue Chanzy. The Lille tramway has very little street running, but here in Tourcoing is a short section of single track. Car 16 has just left the terminus on a trip to central Lille. This is one of two branches of the Mongy, the other leading to Roubaix. These trams are 2.40m wide on metre gauge!

15 june 2009 - Roubaix (FR) – Alfred Mongy. Built by the Italian firm of Breda in 1993, these must be the strangest trams in the world. Just like many (older) Italian women, they’re fat, ugly and very noisy. The designer was Pininfarina (the company who also designed Ferrari and other Italian supercars), so maybe these trams were designed when they were drunk? You wouldn’t enjoy riding in one of these – they make a Konstal 105Na seem very sexy and attractive.

15 june 2009 - Marcq-en-Barœul (FR) – Brossolette. The metre-gauge Lille tramway (universally known as “Le Mongy” after the original engineer) was opened in 1909 along a new road, the Grand Boulevard, stretching from central Lille to the nearby towns of Roubaix and Tourcoing. Although a short branch line from near this point closed down in 1972, the system has survived for 100 years, now with an underground section beneath the city centre. This is the only ‘original’ French tramway to survive.

15 june 2009 - Lille (FR) – Les Pres. The Lille VAL is fantastic – before I went there, I imagined a little ‘toy’ railway, but it really is amazing. Sure, the rubber-tyred trains are small (just 2m wide and 13m long), but they run very fast and the system covers a distance of 45km and has 60 stations, all with full disabled access and platform doors. Two cars make a train, although stations are long enough for four-car trains in the future. Most of the system is below ground, but here at Les Pres it can be seen to best advantage. VAL operation is entirely automatic and trains run every couple of minutes. Great!

13 june 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) – Rue de la Vielle Poissonnerie . The designers of the Valenciennes tramway seem to have learned from the mistakes of other cities – this line goes exactly where people wish to travel, without fancy subways or stations in the sky. Here, a tram runs directly through the main shopping streets between the railway station and the town hall.

13 june 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) – Solange Tonini. More empty fields on the line to Denain. These trams are very smart and were probably built locally – Alstom has a factory in Valenciennes. Like many of the ‘new’ French tramways, the design is stylish and attractive.

13 june 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) – Saint Waast. Near the Transvilles depot, a tram to Espace Villars running through a pleasant strip of parkland. The Valenciennes tramway makes extensive use of these grass-filled tracks, which look very nice but obviously need some maintenance – many cities in Poland have grass-filled tracks, too, of course, but these are not quite the same!

13 may 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) – Le Galibot. Look – no houses! The Valenciennes tramway is a true interurban, linking the city centre with the nearby town of Denain across this empty landscape. Here, there is no tram stop for nearly 2km – who would use it? Maybe a passing cow? Anyway, it makes a nice picture.

13 june 2009 - Valenciennes (FR) – Denain, Espace Villars. Valenciennes trams terminate in the centre of the busy little town of Denain, where there is cross-platform interchange to local bus lines. In former times, Valenciennes had a large, Vicinal-style tram network that ran between several towns in the region, and even reached the Belgian border to connect with their tram lines. I don’t know if the old trams ever came here, though - anyway, they were all gone by the 1960s.

Here in Valenciennes, the single, 28km line runs these silver-grey Alstom trams every few minutes, linking the city centre to the University and other districts. This tram is heading for the University.

Tak czy inaczej fajnie byłoby pracować na takiej zajezdni. Początek pracy nad oceanem, koniec pracy przy zachodzącym słońcu nad oceanem, kurcze rozmarzyłem się. Dobranoc.

25 january 2009 - Martinika, Fort-de France. W końcu znalazłem wyspę na karaibach z prawdziwymi autobusami. Piękne umiejscowienie zajezdni zaraz nad oceanem. Składa się ona z dwóch części, oraz dodatkowo autobusy tej firmy stoją na każdym zakręcie tego osiedla.

W ramach pielęgnowania przyjaźni francusko-rosyjskiej postanowił skupić za ciężkie pieniądze wszystkie wagony metra z kontynentalnej Rosji, poddać je NG i rozparcelować między systemy metra w całej Francji. Ten skład najprawdopodobniej pochodzi z Sankt Petersburga. Przez wprowadzenie tego typu pociągów, system metra w konurbacji Lille przestał być systemem bezobsługowym. Bezrobotni zacierają ręce, całej akcji towarzyszy program darmowych kursów na maszynistę dla zarejestrowanych bezrobotnych. Ciekawe co na to Nigel Farage i inni tropiciele absurdów w UE.
