Duewag GT8ZR #17

3 october 2008 - Resita, Romania - Strada Paul Iorgovici: The huge steelworks towers over Resita and forms a backdrop to Duewag tram #17 as it makes its way from the eastern terminus of Piata Republica towards the centre of the city. Services ran to this terminus every few minutes, but an extension to a village further along the same road only seemed to operate once in a long while. Noise and smoke from the steelworks always seems to fill the air in this city.

Duewag GT8ZR #13

3 october 2008 - Resita, Romania - tramway depot: Like all the Resita Duewags, the fleet number was displayed in the route number blind box instead of any other visible number, a simple but effective system. All the trams wore advertising liveries, some of which were quite elaborate. This is #13 in the depot yard. .

Duewag GT8ZR #18

3 october 2008 - Resita, Romania - tramway depot: Another `one generation` Romanian tramway which opened in 1988 and closed down when all the assets like track and vehicles simply became too worn for further safe operation. The Resita tramway was a single route system through the city and was unusual in that it was owned (like much else in the city) by the local steelworks company - which still runs the bus services today. To keep going a while longer when their original fleet of Romanian-built Timis 2 trams wore out, they were entirely replaced by Duewag GT8 vehicles from Germany and these provided the services until final closure. Here is car #18 in the depot yard.

Tatra KT4D #178

28 september 2008 - Constanta, Romania - Soseaua Industriala: A scene outside the Constanta bus depot and a few metres from the entrance to the tramway depot. What would you give for a glass of fresh milk from these cows, grazing in all kinds of litter and filth? Although Constanta claims to be a tourist and holiday destination, this part of town looks more like the Third World than a civilised country.

Tatra KT4D #183

28 september 2008 - Constanta, Romania - Strada Zorelelor: The terminal loop for the trams in this part of town was at the end of this narrow street, where two trams together made it difficult for any other traffic to pass. Romanian V3A and Tatra KT4-D trams seemed to be used indescriminately, both appearing entirely at random on either of the two routes.

Tatra KT4D #184

28 september 2008 - Constanta, Romania - Strada Zorelelor: Ex-Berlin Tatra KT4-D tram #184 just before the end of Route 102, which ran from here across the city to the tramway depot in the industrial area. These Tatra cars were in much better condition than the Romanian V3A trams - which continued to be used alongside the Tatras, but were gradually falling apart. Within a few weeks, the system was closed for good, anyway.

ITB V3A #157

28 september 2008 - Constanta, Romania - Strada Zorelelor: Constanta tramways opened in 1984, the same time as several other Romanian cities because Government decree required them, often to link housing areas to heavy industry. The Constanta system comprised just two routes and was equipped with a number of URAC-designed V3A trams built by the Electrocomputere works in Craiova. These cars carried quite large numbers of passengers, but were crude in design and not particularly popular, so were later joined by some ex-Berlin surplus Tatra KT4-D trams. Here, a V3A nears the city terminus of Line 102, which overlooked the Black Sea and the beach.

28 september 2008 - Constanta, Romania - Soseaua Industriala: The bucolic entrance to Constanta`s tramway depot, with cows grazing untroubled in the road outside and numerous stray dogs scratching in the dirt. Note the very elaborate sign above the entrance road - probably the most valuable thing here, given the state of most of the trams inside! The works truck referenced in the photo description is in the far distance.

Rocar 212E #617

28 september 2008 - Constanta, Romania - trolleybus depot, Sector 2: Part of the scrap line at the depot, showing two Rocar 212E trolleys not seen before on TWB. Srapping here seemed to be a gradual process, with just some parte being removed as were needed to keep other vehicles on the road. Everything is gone now....

Rocar 212E #621

28 september 2008 - Constanta, Romania - trolleybus depot, Sector 2: Another Rocar 212E clingin on to operational life at the Constanta trolleybus depot. Most of this model had already been withdrawn by the time I visited and there appeared to be a policy of cannibalisation, just to keep a few remaining buses fit for service. When the system finally closed down, one or two of the newer, articulated trolleybuses went on for further use in the city of Piatra Neamt, but all others were scrapped.

Rocar 212E #622

28 september 2008 - Constanta, Romania - Strada Traian: The trams and trolleybuses in the Black Sea city of Constanta are now just a memory. In 2008, both systems were still operating (just), although they did not last much longer and were becoming very badly maintained, with many vehicles awaiting scrapping. Here is one of the small fleet of Rocar 212E trolleybuses, first placed into service in 1998, which were among the first one to go.

Tatra T3m #73

29 september 2006 - Liberec, Czech Republic - Mlynska: Despite the Liberec to Jablonec interurban tramway being often visited by many enthusiasts, this Tatra T2 #73 somehow escaped notice and has never been shown on TWB - so here it is. Even if it escaped being scrapped many years ago, it won`t last very much longer.

Tatra T2 #26

29 september 2006 - Liberec, Czech Republic - Viaduct: This place is exactly that, a turning loop underneath the railway viaduct, just along from the main Liberec railway station. This marks the limit of metre gauge track - lines from here through the city centre are laid with dual gauge track, as well as the central depot, where there are some interesting track layouts as a result. Tatra T2 #26 and its partner #27 wait here to start a journey along the rural interurban line to the nearby city of Jablonec.

Tatra T2 #26

29 september 2006 - Liberec, Czech Republic - Centrum: In just over two weeks` time, the very last Tatra T2 trams in passenger service anywhere will be withdrawn. This one and its companion #27 were first introduced in Ostrava in 1958 but came here when interurban Line 11 to Jablonec became the only route not converted to standard gauge in the whole country - work even started here, but never completed. After some modernisation, a few remaining T2 cars have been kept in front line service, but are now 60 years old and being replaced.

Tatra T2 #51

7 june 2008 - Belgrade, Serbia - depou Centralna: Tucked away in a corner of the depot yard and rather hemmed in by other vehicles (so difficult to photograph) is this old trailer tram. I have no idea of its history and the wheels underneath look wrong, but it has been carefully covered in a sheet and has obviously been kept for a reason.

Schindler Be 4/4 #456

7 june 2008 - Belgrade, Serbia - depou Centralna: This 1958 Schindler tram is, I believe, unique in the Belgrade fleet - like many cars of this period, it originally worked at Basel in Switzerland befoe coming here.

B2 #1443

7 june 2008 - Belgrade, Serbia - depou Centralna: A newly-refurbished ex-Basel trailer car.

Duewag GT6 #610

7 june 2008 - Belgrade, Serbia - depou Centralna: A withdrawn ex-Basel Duewag GT6, one of many transferred here from Switzerland. This particular one was never shown here before.

Đuro-Đaković 101 #11

7 june 2008 - Belgrade, Serbia - depou Centralna: A wreck of a bogie trailer seen inside the drelict shed at the Belgrade tram depot. I didn`t see any other bogie trailers anywhere, so perhaps this is the only one they have - in spite of its poor condition, perhaps it is being kept for eventual restoration?

Đuro-Đaković 101 #22

7 june 2008 - Belgrade, Serbia - tramway depot: We have seen #22 before - it is a locally-built tram of the 1960s and is kept as a museum piece, although the face painted on the front is not to everyone`s taste. This vehicle was stored right at the back of the crumbling depot shed, so presumably someone was brave enough to go in, under the very dodgy roof, and bring it out.

Ringhoffer snowbroom #01

7 june 2008 - Belgrade, Serbia - tramway depot: tucked inside the derelict shed at the depot was this interesting electric locomotive, presumably intended for recovering broken down trams and for transport during track works. It looked to be in very good condition, so I wonder if it really was discarded or just parked out of the way? The roof of the shed was in very bad conditon, however, so you went inside at your peril and this seemed an odd place to leave it.

B4 #1409

7 june 2008 - Belgrade, Serbia - tramway depot: Also on the scrap line were these trailer cars from Basel, built as long ago as 1948, so the two systems certainly had very good use out of them.

Duewag BE 4/6 #640

7 june 2008 - Belgrade, Serbia - tramway depot: These ex-Basel Deuwags were part of a large second-hand fleet which gave good service in Belgrade, but were on the scrap line in 2008 and were unlikely to run again - presumably they met the Great Scrapman in the Sky a long time ago. In fact, the whole shed they are standing in front of was condemned as unsafe when I visited and I expect this has either fallen down or been demolished by now.

Белкоммунмаш 321

14 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - Belkommunmash factory: Yet another trolleybus for Odessa in Ukraine, this one needs a little more work before it is finished. It is marked as job number 1401 in the Belcommunmash production line, so if this is the number of vehicles they have built so far this year, the factory is doing very well. This is the very last of my photographs from my first trip to Ukraine and Belarus - thanks again to everyone for their help in interpreting the language and identifying vehicles, both of which look quite strange to British eyes.

Белкоммунмаш 802Е0В

14 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - Belkommunmash factory: One of two four-axle trams being built for an unknown customer - the only identification I could find was a label saying "#23 and #3". I expect one of you will know where these two trams will be going when they are completed? I didn`t see any more of this batch.

Белкоммунмаш 43303А

14 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - Belkommunmash factory: The back of a bus. This is the rear of the Yerevan artic shown in the last photo. You will see that some of the parts which go into these wirefree trolleybuses are imported from the Shanghai AOMEI Technology Development Company in China.

Белкоммунмаш 43303А

14 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - Belkommunmash factory: Another Type 43303A battery/wirefree trolleybus being built for the system in Yerevan, Armenia.

Белкоммунмаш Е420 #АС 0351-7

14 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - Belkommunmash factory: When I visited on September 2017, this Type 43303A battery/wirefree trolleybus was in the works for rectification. Sorry, but I missed the full registration or fleet number and I`m not sure who it belongs to - I guess it isn`t a Minsktrans vehicle, as all the ones I saw in service were artics.

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - transport museum: This ends my selection of photographs showing the vehicles displayed at the Minsktrans transport museum in central Minsk. I am very grateful to those authors from TWB who have helped me enormously in finding the make and model number, plus details of each bus, as I can`t read or speak any Russian.

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - transport museum: A 1986 LiAZ bus in the museum. This was not withdrawn from passenger service until 2008 - not a bad innings for a city bus.

ЛиАЗ 677М #036749

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - transport museum: This unusual-looking bus came to the city in 1984 and has been a museum exhibit since 2006. From the look of earlier photos on TWB it was active until then and may still be a runner.

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - transport museum: A final selection of photographs showing the buses and coaches displayed in the Minsktrans transport museum in Central Minsk. This one was built in 1987 and came here for preservation in 2007.

Ikarus 280.08 #032166

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - transport museum: The third Ikarus bus of the trio displayed in the Minsk museum is this 280.08 model of 1989, which came here in 2007.

Ikarus 260.37 #012734

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - transport museum: An Ikarus 260.37 in the Minsktrans museum. Built in 1989, this bus came to the museum in 2009. Please note - the "N" character in the registration is really a reversed Cyrillic character, which I can`t replicate on this keyboard - sorry!

Ikarus 256.51 #050989

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - transport museum: Today is Minsk Ikarus day, which I hope will interest many enthusiasts of this famous make. Here is an Ikarus 256.51 of 1987 which came to the museum in 2008.

Тролза-62052.02 #5295

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - transport museum: A TROLZA Russian-made articulated, trolley bus., one of a very small batch which operated in Minsk in the early 2000s.

ЗиУ-683В01 #5300

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - transport museum: Another trolleybus from the Minsk fleet, this one built in 1992 and withdrawn from operational service some time ago.

ПАЗ 4230-01 #030104

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - transport museum: Continuing views of the Minsktrans company museum in central Minsk, this is an MA3-4230-02 type coach. Like most vehicles in the museum, it doesn`t show any fleet number.

РАФ 22038

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - transport museum: This 12-seater minibus is displayed at the museum of the Minsk bus operator. The Cyrillic description in Russian on the windscreen identifies it but has totally defeated me! I will show this label as my next picture, so that someone far more clever than me can discover the make and type.....

МАЗ 105041 #012866

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - transport museum: This articulated city bus is listed by the museum as Type MA3-105.041 with a Mercedes Benz engine, although others of this type are listed in TWB as having Renault power plants - I don`t know why this is.

Неман 52012 #061328

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - Transport Museum: Another bus from the large fleet of the Minsk city transport operator, now displayed in the transport museum.

ЗиУ-5Д #397

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - Transport Museum: One of the older vehicles kept by the Minsk transport operator is this trolleybus from 1959, fleet number 397, which was in fully operational condition until a few years ago and occasionally ventured out onto the network. Perhaps it can still run? Anyway, it`s now in the museum.

ЗиУ-682 КВР #4239

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - Transport Museum: Given that Minsk has the second largest trolleybus fleet in the world, it would probably be quicker to list the types that haven`t ever run here, instead of just those which have. Most have come from the local Belkommunmash factory, where the works are so important that there is even a wiring link straight into the city`s trolleybus network. This bus came around 2003, so probably ran in passenger service until comparatively recently.

Белкоммунмаш 201 #2083

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - Transport Museum: A Belkommunmash-built trolleybus, one of several displayed at the new museum of the Minsk transport operator. A number of old trolleybuses are displayed here, at one of the biggest trolleybus systems in the world. The only problem might be that they all look nice and shiny just now, but are lined up outside with no protection from the winter weather, so great care will have to be taken to stop their condition from deteriorating.

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - Transport Museum: A long distance bus (or coach) in the collection of the Minsk Transport Museum, which has a number of buses and trolleybuses, a couple of trams and a lot more indoor displays, including motorcycles and artefacts recording the hisory of transport in Minsk. I`m not sure how you can visit, but I`m sure that a telephone call to the headquarters of the transport operator will get you in.

МАЗ-103Т #4444

15 september 2018 - Minsk, Belarus - Transport Museum: A set of photographs showing the vehicles displayed at the new museum recently opened by the Minsk bus and tram operator. I don`t know if this place is yet open to the general public. I must also point out that I can`t translate the Cyrillic script and language from the informative labels on each vehicle and I have perhaps listed some under the wrong operator - sorry! I`m on safer ground with this one, though - an MA3-103T trolleybus built by the local Belkommunmash factory in 1999 and only quite recently withdrawn from operational service.

К1М #343

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Shevchenko tramway depot: This small class of trams looks as though it was built locally, perhaps in the Kiev Tramway`s own workshops, using Tatra T6 or T3 cars as a basis?

Tatra T6B5SU #308

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Shevchenko tramway depot: An early Tatra T6 that will never run again, obviously being cannibalised for parts to keep other cars running, is #308, which stands in the yard of the Shevchenko depot.

МТВ-82 #ПМ-7

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Shevchenko tramway depot: A heavily-converted KTB-57 tram in the works car fleet, modified to carry a large tank. I don`t know what the tank carries - maybe just water, or perhaps petrol?

КТВ-57 #АВ-5

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Shevchenko tramway depot: Another towing KTB-57 tram is ex-passenger car #2072, now numbered AB-5 in the works car fleet.

КТВ-57 #AB-2

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Shevchenko tramway depot: AB-2 is an ex-KTB-57 tram now used as a towing car to move broken down or accident damaged trams from anywhere on the network. The extra bank of resistances on the roof are there to spread the electrical load generated when the car is pulling a heavy load.

КТВ-57 #КСВ-2

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Shevchenko tramway depot: More from the depot serving the fast tram lines in Kiev - this is an ex-passenger KTB-57 car which has been extensively converted to an overhead line repair and inspection car.

КТВ-57 #Л-1

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Shevchenko tramway depot: One of many ex-passenger vehicle which are now part of the works car fleet of Kiev Tramways. This particular one is clearly recognisable es a former KTB-57 tram, of which the city had many, now modified to inspect overhead lines.

ГС-4 #C-17

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Shevchenko tramway depot: The very last snow tram I will inflict upon you from this trip to Belarus and Ukraine is this one parked in the depot serving Kiev`s fast tram section. Again, a standard type supplied in the days of Soviet management.

ГС-4 #С-23

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Shevchenko tramway depot: The fact that this snow broom is numbered C-23 points to there having once been lots and lots of these snow clearers in the Kiev fleet. Because Ukraine has hard weather and this system has much track laid in the street, no doubt these come out onto the lines quite often in the winter months.

Грузовоз #B-17

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Shevchenko tramway depot: now we have moved to the depot serving the south-west of Kiev Tramways as we continue looking at their non-passenger cars. This was the only four-wheeled vehicle I saw and is a general works lorry, seen here carrying wheels and axles. There were several identical trams parked in the Darnitska trackwork depot, where I wasn`t able to get close enough for a photo.

Tatra T6B5SU #001

15 september 2018 - Kiev, Ukraine - Podilske tramway depot: This Tatra T6 was obviously the very first to come to Kiev and is now tarted up as a party tram, available for hire to visitors. Inside are tables and a small servery for drinks etc.
