Duewag GT6 #442

20 may 2005 - Tabarz, near Gotha. The substantial Thuringerwaldbahn terminus on the edge of Tabarz village – the line once continued a little further along the main village street. At this point, the tram is nearly 20km from Gotha city centre.

20 may 2005 - Gotha – Thuringerwaldbahn near Wahlwinkel. Deuwag 408 (ex-Brandenburg) is almost completely lost in the landscape as it heads towards Freidrichroda and Tabarz.

Gotha G4-65 #215

1 august 2004 - Gotha, zajezdnia/depot Waltershauserstrasse. 215 is the last East German Gotha articulated car, modelled on the Deuwag GT4, to remain in the city where it was built. It is now a museum car.

Gotha T57 #47

1 august 2004 - Gotha, zajezdnia/depot Waltershauserstrasse. Although in superb external condition, 47 is actually used as a works car, mainly to transport tramway workers to remote places along the Thuringerwaldbahn, away from roads.

Duewag GT6 #396

1 august 2004 - Gotha, zajezdnia/depot Waltershauserstrasse. Classic GT6 trams, acquired second-hand from Mannheim - all normal services are now run by ex-Erfurt Tatra KT4Ds and the sizeable collection of Deuwags has been either retired or scrapped.

Tatra KT4MC #306

19 may 2005 - Gotha, Bahnhofstrasse. This KT4D was specially painted to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Thuringerwaldbahn in 2005. This car came second-hand from nearby Erfurt.

Duewag GT6 #320

20 may 2005 - Gotha, Bahnhofstrasse. 2005 was the last year of extensive Deuwag operation in Gotha, as ex-Erfurt Tatra cars were arriving in numbers to replace these lovely classic trams. 442 and 320, working the two in-town routes, stand together at the Bahnhof terminus - also now gone and replaced with a sexy new interchange.

Tatra KT4SU #233

29 may 2006 - Liepaja, Latvia – Rigas Iela. Car 233 (not 1018!) has just passed the very fine old railway station. This building still functions, but mainly as a bus terminal – there is (or was, at the time of my visit) just one passenger train a day.

Tatra KT4D #238

29 may 2006 - Liepaja, Latvia - Rigas Iela. Car 238 passes the depot entrance on its way to the northern terminus. No destinations or route numbers are displayed – there is only one route – and the indicators are been panelled over.

Tatra KT4D #245

29 may 2006 - Liepaja, Latvia – Krisjana Valdemara Iela. ex-Erfurt 245 passes some pleasant old buildings to the south of the town centre. If there was once a fleet livery, no-one seems to remember it and all cars wear all-over advertisements.

Tatra KT4SU #234

29 may 2006 - Liepaja, Latvia – zajezdnia/depot, Rigas Iela. The tiny old depot building is only large enough for a few trams and the rest are stored outside. Access to the depot involves a very complicated reverse shunt across a main road – driving straight in or out from either direction is impossible, as the track layout is very restrictive. KT4Ds 234 (apparently made by Volkswagen), 237 and 246 stand inside the depot.

Tatra KT4D #238

29 may 2006 - Liepaja, Latvia – Rigas Iela. This small, metre-gauge system is operated entirely with Tatra KT4 trams, either bought new or picked up second-hand from Cottbus and Erfurt in Germany. Here, ex-Cottbus 238 passes the depot, midway along the solitary route.

19 may 2005 - Zwickau, Aeussere Schneeberger Strasse. A few seconds later, tram 907 passes along the same track in the other direction – the diesel railcar is now safely tucked away in the standard-gauge platform until its next scheduled departure to the Czech border town of Kraslice.

Siemens/Deuwag RegioSprinter #VT 35

19 may 2005 - Zwickau, Aeussere Schneeberger Strasse. I hope the TWB censors will allow this one photo to illustrate the Zwickau tram-train in operation - at this point, the train is running as a tram on a city tramway, so is really a tram – the distinction is no longer clear-cut! The RegioSprinter has travelled from Stadthalle along the street on mixed-gauge tracks and is just crossing into the terminal platform at Zentrum. You can ride the train into town from one of the outlying tram stops, just as if it were a tram.

AEG GT6M #906

19 may 2005 - Zwickau – Haltestelle Zentrum. As the main railway station is some distance from the city centre, Zwickau was one of the first places to adopt the now-fashionable ‘tram-train’ concept. Vogtlandbahn RegioSprinter VT 35 waits at the single, standard gauge terminal track, right in the middle of Zwickau’s commercial centre, whilst metre-gauge city trams serve the other side of the island platform – true transport integration.

AEG GT6M #906

19 may 2005 - Zwickau – Stadthalle. Zwickau in Saxony was once the home of the celebrated Trabant motor car. The progressive tramway system here was rather overlooked in TWB until now. AEG metre-gauge tram 906 waits to leave Stadthalle with a Line 8 service. Buses use the other face of the island platform, so commuters don’t need to get wet. The network has since been extended from here to a new terminus, further out in the suburbs, and Line 8 no longer exists.

30 may 2006 - Riga, Latvia – Bauskas Iela. Tatra T3 4-2181 leads along a single track, roadside section of Line 10. The Riga numbering scheme is another feature from Soviet times. The first digit signifies the tram’s home depot and often changes over time - very awkward for the TWB database!

Miscellaneous #034

30 may 2006 - Riga, Latvia - Tipografijas Iela. The Riga ‘retro tram’ is claimed to date from the first electric lines opened by company TTP Riga in 1901 and wears this number on the dash – however, I believe the correct fleet number is 034 and it may be a little younger. It’s certainly an important survivor (particularly as the only other old Riga tram, the gorgeous RM-56 behind, was destroyed by fire just after this photo was taken). But why the awful dressing up - I suppose tourists like it? It now (2008) wears an even more flamboyant paint scheme.

26 august 1982 - Crich, Derbyshire – National Tramway Museum. Ringhoffer car 180 was a gift from Hungarian tramway engineers in 1968. Tatra K3R-NT #311

Tatra T1 #121
