Tatra T3SUCS #155

14 may 2005 - Olomouc, Nova Ulice – Hranicni, Tatra T3s provide the basic service, running either singly or in pairs. On the newest track extension, #155 approaches the outer terminus of Line 4 with the city spread out below.

Škoda 03T2 #203

14 may 2005 - Olomouc, Nova Ulice – Hranicni. Olomouc was an early user of the Astra low-floor tram - #203 is one of four that came here in 1998/99.

Tatra T3SUCS #159

14 may 2005 - Olomouc, zajezdnia/depot Sokolska. Due to lack of space in the cramped, 100-years-old depot, many trams have to be parked just outside on these open-air sidings. This area is called the ‘Rubik’ after the famous puzzle, as extreme care must be taken to store each tram in a certain order, or it will be in the wrong place (and so blocked in by other trams) when service starts again the next morning.

Tatra T3SUCS #165

14 may 2005 - Olomouc, Namesti Republiki. This old university city has some fine buildings and a compact and efficient tramway system. Here, a T3 pair headed by #165 passes through the historic city centre.

Kopřivnická 1912 #5

16 may 2005 - Brno-Lisen, Holzova. The large museum shed at Lisen in Brno houses historic trams from all over the former Czechoslovakia, brought there with the intention of forming a working national museum on a redundant tramway track. This plan was then overtaken by political events, and the trams are now stranded at this rather sad place, with all thoughts of operating trams here apparently abandoned. Included in the collection are several interesting trams from Czech 760mm gauge interurban lines, like car 5 of SZD Ostrava, seen here - very advanced for 1912.

Tatra T2 #4115

15 may 2005 - Brno, zajezdnia/depot Medlanky. Not in such good condition as #4121, this works T2 didn’t seem have moved since photographed here in January 2003. Perhaps it has gone by now?

Tatra T2 #4121

15 may 2005 - Brno, zajezdnia/depot Pisarky. This smart works T2 is kept for depot shunting and recovery purposes. Obviously well-loved - is it still there?

4MT #4058

15 may 2005 - Brno, zajedznia/depot Pisarky. Now moved to the Technical Museum store at Lisen, this car of Type 4MT was one of the last batch of two-axle trams bought by Brno in 1948. Then the Tatra T1 was invented, so the rest was history……….

2-axle motor tram #107

15 may 2005 - Brno, ul. Jostova. This historic motor and trailer set is retained by DP Brno for special trips. Compare the date of construction of #107 with #4058 in the next photo – hard to believe they were built only five years apart.

Duewag GT8 #201

25 march 2008 - Zgierz, Stary Rynek. Waiting at the passing loop in Old Zgierz – and causing a minor tram hold-up in the process. At certain loops on the Ozorkow line two of these very long GT-8s cannot pass, requiring careful scheduling and causing a headache if they do!

Duewag GT8 #201

25 march 2008 - Ozorkow, Ul. Wyszynskiego. I don’t think a GT-8 is really meant to go here (and maybe didn’t ever do so before), but driver Adam Paczowski is very enthusiastic and helpful to visiting enthusiasts, so was persuaded to give it a try! You can see the condition of the track.....

Tatra T3SUCS #407

2 may 2004 - Kosice, Slovakia – Juzna trieda. Solo T3 #407, Line 3. There are plans to scrap the Kosice trolleybus operation quite soon and replace it with an extended tramway network, provided money can be found.

Tatra T2 #212

29 april 2002 - Kosice, Slovakia – Sturova. Tatra T2 museum car (ex-Ostrava #619). Was the Tatra T2 the most handsome tram ever built? Kosice operated 30 of their own, but all were scrapped, so this one was scrounged from elsewhere.

Tatra T3 Mod #359

29 april 2002 - Kosice, Slovakia – Polovska. The long express tramway from Kosice to US Steel (formerly the East Slovak Steel Works) is busy at shift change times, with a special service of trams running non-stop from all over the city. #359 is one of the lightly modernised Tatra T3s and is followed by ‘standard’ T3 #361. Trams on this line run ‘on sight’ at very close intervals, as shown here.

Horse tram

29 april 2002 - Kosice, Slovakia – Stare Mesto. Replica horse car in the pedestrianised city centre. These tracks were once used for normal service, but are no longer electrified and are in action only occasionally for special events and festivals. The replica horse tram passes the Opera House.

Tatra T2 #212

29 april 2002 - Kosice, Slovakia – zajezdnia/depot DPMK. An impressive line-up of several generations of Kosice trams - museum car #103, and Tatra types T2, KT8D, T3SUCS and T6A5.

Tatra T3SUCS #7739

27 april 2002 - Bratislava, Slovakia - Staromestska. A two-car set on Line 4 passes the National Theatre. When Bratislava was still in Czechoslovakia, there were plans to convert all remaining metre-gauge tramways to standard gauge (work nearly completed in Liberec). After 1991, however, this plan was cancelled and Bratislava remains metre-gauge throughout, although sections of three rail track, laid but never used, can be found in several places.

Tatra K2S #7105

27 april 2002 - Bratislava, Slovakia – ul. Jesenskeho, outside the Slovak National Opera. At one time it was possible to catch an international interurban tram from this exact spot for a trip all the way to Vienna, Austria. A car from this line has been preserved and runs today on the Stern and Hafferl Atterseebahn.

Tatra T6A5 #7933

27 april 2002 - Bratislava, Slovakia – ul. Kapucynska. A pair of Tatra T6s descends from the tram tunnel beneath Bratislava citadel towards the city centre.

Tatra K2S #7104

27 april 2002 - Bratislava, Slovakia – ul. Panska. Rebuilt Tatra K2 #7104 on a regular Line 14 service passes chartered historic car 38 (SGP Graz 1958) at the lay-by track in the city centre. A number of elderly K2s have been completely rebuilt as virtually new trams.

Ikarus 260.51 #2929

28 may 2006 - Jarva-Jaani, Eesti/Estonia – Autode Muuseum/Transport Museum. This Ikarus had just arrived at Jarva-Jaani when I visited and was fully operational. The museum’s Tallinn Tatra T4SU tram, also acquired in 2006, can be seen peeping into the picture. There are currently over 250 separate exhibits at this fascinating place, including 30 buses, although conditions for proper storage and display are virtually nonexistent.

27 may 2006 - Tallinn/Eesti/Estonia - zajezdnia/depot Mustamee. The solitary TTTK Karosa B731, not seen on TWB before, stands at the trolleybus depot. Presumably this is retained for emergency use when the wires are down?

Works tram #T-4

26 may 2006 - Tallinn, Eesti/Estonia - zajezdnia/depot Vana-Louna. Another of the attractive and well-maintained works car fleet. T-4 has quite modern, Gotha-style bodywork but the underframe appears to come from an original 1925 Tallinn motor tram – compare this with historic car T-11.

Tatra KT4D #144

27 may 2006 - Tallinn, Eesti/Estonia – zajezdnia/depot Vana-Louna. The delivery of new Combinos to Erfurt, Germany in 2004/5 made a large fleet of KT4D trams redundant and these were sold to other operators, including Tallinn - it is clear from this photo that they were still in excellent condition. Here, ex-EVAG 449 waits to be returned to service (still displaying Erfurt route destinations!). The wheels have already been re-gauged from metre gauge to 1067mm.

27 may 2006 - Tallinn, Eesti/Estonia – Mere Puiestee. Line 1. A Tatra KT4D extended in 2004 with a low-floor centre section, making it into a KTNF6. The wheels carrying the new centre section are really tiny – just like those on a skateboard.

BN PCC 7000 #7068

12 august 1999 - Bruxelles, Tour du Midi. Line 56 barre. A nice little PCCs in original livery, working a peak hour duty. Nowadays, the few remaining 7000-series PCCs don’t normally work into the centre of the city.

Konstal 102Na #2040

28 april 2001 - Wroclaw, Dabie. Line 2

BN PCC 7000 #7168

12 august 1999 - Bruxelles, Barriere - St Gilles. Line 18. A very interesting place - PCC 7168 has come from Theodore Verhaegenstraat in the distance and must turn sharp right here. This is too sharp for a direct tramway track, so the tram makes a huge, 450-degree circle to its left, so it is facing the right way to continue into Parklaan (on the far left of the picture), crossing the track it is on now.

Tatra T3SU #3-302

30 may 2006 - Riga, Latvia/Latvija – outside Depot III. Riga has an extensive and varied fleet of works trams, including several of these purpose-built water cars. These run all day (and also at night) watering the track to lay dust and lubricate curves, something rarely seen in the 21st century. All Riga trams use trolley poles – perhaps to simplify the many crossings with the trolleybus network, but when the current all-Tatra fleet is completely replaced by new, low-floor designs (planned by 2010) it will be interesting to see if these are retained. A Combino with a trolley pole should be worth seeing!
