Autorail - SNCV Destelbergen #AR 266

18 august 1999 - Han-sur-Lesse, Belgium/Belgie. Nearly all the autorails here were originally used elsewhere on the Vicinal network and came to the Grottes de Han as other rural lines closed. Here, AR266 of 1936, the newest of the six autorails in service, waits to form another train to the Grottes. ART90, in the background, was constructed in 1934 from a trailer car dating from the 1890s.

Autorail - Baume et Marpent #AR 145

18 august 1999 - Han-sur-Lesse, Belgium/Belgie. Another TWB debut (and possibly the operator with the longest name). This 3.2km line of the vast Vicinal tramway network, somewhat overlooked by enthusiasts, has been operating continuously since 1906, connecting Han-sur-Lesse village with the famous Grottes de Han caves. Tourists are taken by tram to the cave entrance and walk underground back to the village (so the trams come back empty). Six original Vicinal diesel autorails haul open ‘baladeuse’ trailers – this is AR145 waiting for passengers at the village loop.

Autorail - Baume et Marpent #AR 133

18 august 1999 - Dochamps, Belgium/Belgie. Here, AR 133 has travelled to the farthest extent of the TTA line and waits to return to the northern terminus at Pont d’Erezee. Normal passenger trips don’t usually come this far as the track is in very poor condition. Autorails like this operated most SNCV/NMBS rural services, often pulling passenger trailers and/or goods wagons. Road improvements eventually killed off the tramways. Note the posting box for letters, which would be emptied in the next town.

Autorail - Baume et Marpent #AR 133

18 august 1999 - Blier, Belgium/Belgie. A debut on TWB for this operator, and also (possibly) the first diesel tram? Nearly 5000km of metre-gauge ‘Vicinal’ tramways once covered Belgium, electrified in some towns, but in rural areas operated by diesel (formerly steam) trams. This delightful Vicinal line closed in 1959 but was taken over by TTA in 1964 as an enthusiast/tourist operation, but money for improvements is very tight. The line runs through beautiful countryside, but suffers from being in a very remote area and is hard to reach - just one bus goes there every Tuesday morning (but doesn’t come back).

Brossel / Paul D`Heure / ACEC #402

11 august 1999 - Liege Transport Museum, Belgium/Belgie. The other end of the RELSE trolleybus is identical, as shown here. This might be the back – or perhaps it’s the front? Luckily, there was only one driver ;-)

Brossel / Paul D`Heure / ACEC #402

11 august 1999 - Liege Transport Museum, Belgium/Belgie. The RELSE operated an interurban tram route from Liege to Seraing until 1968. In Seraing, a trolleybus line was introduced in 1936, but there was no room at the terminus for a normal turning circle of overhead wires. The solution? A double-ended trolleybus! Believe it if you will – THREE axles, TWO sets of driver controls (including TWO steering wheels) and FOUR trolley poles! This last survivor of these four amazing buses ran until 1963. This picture shows the front – or maybe the back – who knows?

Jubilee #762

28 april 2006 - Blackpool, Lancashire - South Promenade. After the Centenary Class single-deckers, Blackpool tried converting double-deck Balloon cars to one person operation. Only two were built before it was realised that this was a very difficult and expensive option, so a new fleet of modern trams is still badly needed.

East Lancs Centenary #645

28 april 2006 - Blackpool, Lancashire - South Promenade. Blackpool is not just a holiday destination, so all-year-round transport is needed. This is one of eight trams built in 1985 for winter services, suitable for operation by one person. The bodywork uses mostly bus parts and isn't very beautiful.

Brush Railcoach #622

28 april 2006 - Blackpool, Lancashire, UK - North Shore. Inside Railcoach #622. The seats are fixed replacements for the original reversible style. Conductors in Blackpool (as in most cities of northwest England) are always called 'guards'. This one must be going home from work very soon.....

Brush Railcoach #622

28 april 2006 - Blackpool, Lancashire, UK - Pleasure Beach. The standard single-deck Blackpool trams of the 1930s were these Railcoaches, of which a number are still in use. Most carry advertising liveries - #622 was 'between' adverts, so was running temporarily in plain grey colour.

28 april 2006 - Blackpool, Lancashire - Pleasure Beach, South Shore. Here we see the upper deck of #706. Note the trolley pole, two staircases and reversible seats - you can change their direction. In the background is another Balloon car #701 and also the Pepsi Max Big One roller-coaster

English Electric Baloon #706

28 april 2006 - Blackpool, Lancashire - Pleasure Beach, South Shore. From your comments, it seems you find these trams interesting. Here is #706, built as an open-top tram but soon covered up (it rains a lot in England) and not converted again until 1985. It's called "Princess Alice"

HMS Blackpool #736

29 april 2006 - Blackpool, Lancashire, UK – Cabin, North Promenade. REALLY CRAZY! This ‘Pantograph’ tram was built in 1928 as #170 and converted to show visitors the famous Illuminations that take place along the seashore each autumn. It also lights up to make an impressive moving spectacle. Blackpool has several Illuminated Trams, but some are now very old and can’t run in public service (this one does, but is rarely seen during daylight).

28 april 2006 - Blackpool, Lancashire, UK – Pleasure Beach loop/petla. If you thought the Warszawa Ice Cream tram I pictured yesterday is funny, here is a tram of the Blackpool Tramway (a debut for this system on TWB). Walls Ice Cream is famous in UK, and this tram had a shop counter where you could buy ice cream as you travel!

Duewag GT8ZR #83

14 may 2007 - Fulpmes, Tirol, Austria/Osterreich. The independent Stubaitalbahn was integrated with Innsbruck tramways in 1983. This tram originally ran in Hagen as a GT6 and was later extended with a centre section from a Bielefeld car. Innsbruck was, until very recently, the last all-Duwag system in the world, but replacement Bombardier low-floor cars are now starting to arrive, so scenes like this will soon vanish.

19 march 2008 - Ostrava, Dilny DP Martinov/main workshops Martinov. Several new trams have been built by Inekon for the Washington Department of Transportation, USA and will be operated by Metro Washington. #903 is shown here nearest the camera. There is a slight problem – there is no tramway to run them! The Anacostia streetcar line was meant to open in 2007, but no construction has taken place – so the cars are stranded in Ostrava and just go for a little local trip occasionally to keep them in good order. How crazy is that?

Snowbroom

29 june 2006 - Liepaja, Latvia/Latvija – Depot, Rigas Iela. A remarkable survivor and one of the oldest working, non-preserved trams in Europe. This snowbroom is reputed to be converted from an 1899 Herbrand (Koln) passenger car supplied to Liepaja when the tramway was first opened. The bodywork (if you can call it that) was built locally – probably by a maker of garden sheds :-)
